Fake copies of petroleum bill in circulation - Senate

Taiwo Adisa, Abuja - 28.07.2009

THERE was confusion on Monday, as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), Senator Lee Maeba, alerted the public that some agencies had been circulating fake copies of the Petroleum Industry Bill(PIB), currently undergoing legislative procedures in the Senate.

The Senator, who showed a copy of the authentic version of the bill being worked on at a public hearing on the PIB by Senate Joint Committees, including Petroleum(Upstream, Petroleum(Downstream) and Gas, said that the Senate was only working on the bill submitted by President Umaru Yar’Adua.

He said that any other copy being circulated by groups and organisations could not be called a bill.

But the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), working in alliance with some agencies had circulated copies of another version of the bill at the Senate hearing.

Senator Maeba said while presiding over the bill: “Anybody that submits memoranda, because we are here to receive memoranda, can submit memoranda as big as the one sent to us by the president; we don’t mind, but don’t call it a new version of the bill."
