Report reaching us says prisoners in Afikpo prisons, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State during the weekend protested violently against the officials of the prison over what they described as very poor quality of food being served to them as if they are no longer human beings.

According to the report, the protesting prison inmates also broke down the wall where the female prison inmates stay and then used the opportunity to gang rape
the female folks

It was equally gathered that the protest would have turned into a jail break if not
the intervention of military men and police patrol team who arrived the scene and
arrested the situation.

The inmates who came out in their numbers for the protest were seen throwing
stones, bottles, log of woods and other dangerous weapons at the prison officials
who also ran for their lives.

Commenting on the incident, the Ebonyi State's Police Public Relations Officer
(PPRO), ASP George Okafor, said there was a little problem in the Afikpo Prisons,
which would have resulted to a jail break but for the quick response of the
command and military men who brought the situation under control, adding that
cause of the demonstration was as a result of low quality of rice served to the
prisoners.

It was equally alleged that the federal government approves a weekly sum of
N970,000 for the feeding of prison inmates but unfortunately the quality of food
being given to the prisoners is very far below the approved amount; thereby the
demonstration by the inmates.
