Fuel price hike: FG, Labour meeting ends in a deadlock by gift01: 6:16am On May 17, 2016
Talks between the Federal Government and organised labour on the increase in the pump price of petrol ended in a deadlock on Monday night.
.
Briefing journalists at the end of the four-hour meeting on Tuesday morning, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Babachir Lawal, said the two parties had “a fruitful discussion and will continue from where we stopped.”
.
The meeting, which ended at about 12 midnight, will resume at 3pm on Tuesday (today). Lawal, however, refused to answer further questions from newsmen.
.
The Federal Government, however, began another round of meeting with the Joe Ajaero-led faction of the labour movement at about 12.15am on Tuesday after its meeting with the Ayuba Wabba-led Nigeria Labour Congress. Wabba confirmed that discussions with the Federal Government would continue by 3pm on Tuesday (today).
.
Sources at the meeting said the labour leaders were not convinced by the figures presented by the government team.
.
Those who attended the meeting included Wabba; NLC General Secretary, Peter Ozo-Esun; NUPENG president, Igwe Achese; PENGASSAN President, Olabode Johnson; TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama; Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang; and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

There will never be unity in this NLC. Why are there two factions?
Re: Fuel price hike: FG, Labour meeting ends in a deadlock by royaltheo(m): 6:30am On May 17, 2016
Is the federal government trying to endorse two different factions of NLC by negotiating with both of them? That is a "divide and rule" approach. Hoping for a truce today to avert further suffering in th nation.
Re: Fuel price hike: FG, Labour meeting ends in a deadlock by orisa37: 6:31am On May 17, 2016
Government should stop the Payment of Oil Subsidies, bring down Fuel Prices to N100 per litre, electricity tariffs should be reduced by N8 for all levels of consumption
and Labour to bring down its demand for Minimum Wage to N25000 per month.

If NLC is not satisfied with FG figure, then they should bring theirs.

I just don't seem to trust the current NLC leadership.

Hope they prove my distrust wrong. But will it happen?

Hardly comment on politics section because year after year and decade after decade, it's mostly the same out-cry and the same pattern.

A lot of people know and can analyse Nigeria's problems explicitly and implicitly... some go one step further to state solutions (some crap and some brilliant)..... Solutions that are never implemented for the most part.

It all meets a wall.... a really big wall. We need a new species of leaders to rise. Enough of this "all talk, no progress".

NLC should just focus on using this opportunity to get a higher pay package for workers rather than asking for a reverse in pump price....for all knw the pump price matter can always come down in the future....
Re: Fuel price hike: FG, Labour meeting ends in a deadlock by Xapio: 7:43am On May 17, 2016
Very good.. The strike must go on. N145/litre is wickedness angry ... FG should rather fix the price at N100/ltr

How will they focus on higher pay package? Is it not through this strike, then FG will call them for negotiation and there, they will reach a compromise.. Mind you, NLC condition to FG is either they increase minimum wage to N56,000 or reduce the fuel pump price.. I am with NLC angry ..

I've already given a breakdown analysis of how the white collar workers would be the worst hit.

Okada men, in spite their zero economic knowledge know how to increase their fees when prices of fuel increase. This applies to other unskilled workers, artisans, etc.

It is the white collar folks, especially those in the private sector that would suffer.

Sell a litre at N1000, that illiterate danfo driver would run his business profitably, it is you the all knowing educated economist with a static salary that will suffer. Before you oppose or support this movement, think! think! and think about your circumstance.

While some can easily make their clients increase their fees, many employees cannot. In fact, when prices of fuel increase, there is likelihood that some would lose their jobs.

If you're a skilled worker, do not resist anti-government forces unless you have an oil bloc somewhere. The same illiterates you want to help with 'subsidy' are wiser.

We are saying same tin.... My point is that they should take a stand... And that is for an increment in minimum wage... Since the government is now free from the burdens of subsidy

The problem is that the government refused to come clean.. Osinbajo came out to say that they've not removed subsidy rather, the increment was as a result of oil importers sourcing their FX from parallel market. According to them, the new fuel pump price was calculated based on N290/$ so, what that means is the if the FX price keep increasing, the fuel pump price will keep increasing. Another angle is that the FG placed a cap of N145 on pms and my question is, what if the oil importers source their FX at a higher rate and will not be able to make profit on N145 pms cap, what are they (both FG & oil marketers) gonna do? .... If they refuse to import, that means bigger fuel scarcity is looming.. In fact the whole thing is shrouded in secrecy and so, the FG must come clean. angry

Wheda they come clean or not they must be ready to increase the common workers salary to help dem alievate the current hike in common food products like tomatoes and garri..
