The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, National Convention Planning Committee and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the 2016 convention would go on Saturday as scheduled.

He said though there are two conflicting court orders on the conduct of the National Convention, lawyers of the party have filed stay of execution processes and appealed both orders, hence the party has not disobeyed any subsisting order.He noted that under legal procedures, once a court order is timeously challenged, an affected party cannot said to have disobeyed any order.

Addressing newsmen at the Government House,Port Harcourt on Friday, Governor Wike said that today's national convention in the Garden City is the only one recognised by law, with all the necessary legal steps obsessed.He said the parallel convention being talked about has no place in the party structure as it has no connection to the legally constituted organs of the party.

The press conference had Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, Engr David Umahi of Ebonyi State and the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio in attendance.He explained that the Port Harcourt convention of the party is the only one recognised by law because it was approved by all the organs of the party.According to him, the National Working Committee, NWC, the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee and the Governors
Forum upheld that the convention be held in the Eivers State capital.

He said:

"All our 12 elected governors, National Assembly members, State Assembly members and key leaders are already in Port Harcourt for the convention.

"INEC has already recognised this convention and it will be in Port Harcourt to observe the convention as required by law".

In his remarks, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio welcomed all PDP delegates to the convention.Secretary of the National Convention Planning Committee and Ebonyi State Governor, Engr David Umahi urged delegates to the convention to conduct themselves peacefully during the convention.

The Peoples Democratic Party has fired its national chairman, Modu Sheriff, and has appointed an interim party executive led by a former governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi.
A former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, was also appointed interim secretary of the party.
The caretaker committee will pilot the affairs of the party for three months, our sources said.
The PDP took the decision on Saturday as part of efforts to resolve the crises the party is facing, party officials told PREMIUM TIMES.
Meanwhile, the party’s scheduled national convention in Port Harcourt was cancelled, as a faction of the party conducted a parallel convention in Abuja same day.
“The convention is not holding. Our leaders have been meeting since early in the morning and they finally resolved that the convention should be shelved until the court order issued is vacated, “a delegate to the convention told PREMIUM TIMES.
He also said some of the leaders of the party expressed the view that “efforts should be made to resolve all differences with the Jerry Gana group before a fresh national convention is held”.
Our source added that the leadership which comprised of PDP governors and other eminent members of PDP agreed to name an interim committee to replace the National Working Committee, pending the election of new NWC members.


Another source present at the high-powered meeting that was convened at the office of Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt said members resolved to make Mr. Markafi the chairman of the caretaker committee while Mr. Obi would function as secretary of the party.
“Governor Fayose said Sheriff should leave for a new caretaker chairman to take over, but Governor Wike said Sheriff should not be disgraced out of office just like that that they should let him be chairman of the caretaker. The governors rejected Mr. Wike’s suggestion,” the source said.
The source said there will be representatives of the six geopolitical zones in the caretaker committee, too.
“Sheriff was not happy with the development. In fact, he had to storm out of the venue of the meeting, angrily,” the source said.
He said the meeting was attended by most of the party’s serving and former governors, senators and honourable members as well as some members of the board of trustees.
