Just as photographs of a Biafran representative
spotted at a United Nations conference in the
United States made their way into the media,
Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous
People of Biafra (IPOB) has insinuated that the
Biafran territory is recognised in 30 countries of
the world.

It is believed that such international recognition
is necessary for the independence of the area
currently located in the south-eastern part of
Nigeria even though IPOB believes the region
being sought for also covers the south-southern
part of the country.
Kanu, according to Breaking Times, is asking the
Community Court of Justice of the Economic
Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to
force the Nigerian government to pay him $800
million as compensation for the gross violation of
his human rights.
Kanu had been in detention since October 14,
2015 and all efforts to get him to enjoy bail have
been rebuffed by the government.

Kanu said IPOB has representation in 30
countries where it is registered and that the
radio Biafra limited is also registered with the
United Kingdom Companies Act, 2006, and
certified by the registrar of companies for
England and Wales.

As revealed by the documents Kanu filed before
the court, IPOB is registered under the United
Kingdom Companies Act 2006 and has a
certificate with registration number 9141882.
He said he was arrested on a visit to his parents
and his heavily-pregnant wife who was to give
birth through caesarean operation in the UK.

To emphasise the alleged inhuman treatment
meted out on him, he said his legs and hands
were chained by operatives of the Department of
State Services (DSS) in detention.
According to him, this is the worst
dehumanisation, degrading treatment and torture
he has ever experienced.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had said
the Biafra land is beyond areas occupied by the
Igbo-speaking people of the country
, a report aid weeks ago.
According to the group, aside Igbo-speaking
states, Biafra land cut across Itsekiriland on the
western boundary, Oduduwa to Bakassi on the
eastern boundary with Cameroon.
The group added that Biafra land also stretch
across from Idoma and Igala land on the
northern boundary with Arewa or Northern
Nigeria to the Bight of Biafra which is South of
the beautiful island of Bonny.
