Onitsha Transporter, Okeke, Kidnapped
By Chukwujekwu Ilozue , Reporter, Onitsha

Luxury bus operator, Godwin Ubaka Okeke, was kidnapped on Sunday in Onitsha by about 12 armed men, ostensibly for ransom, seven days after the release of Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, who was also abducted in the city.

Okeke, proprietor of GUO Transport Company, was snatched at All Saints Cathedral, Anglican Communion as he came out from the Sunday service.
The gunmen operated with a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a Toyota commuter bus, according to eyewitnesses, who said they first dislodged officers from the central police station before they struck at the church nearby.

They also fired gunshots from the adjoining streets before they grabbed Okeke - a man aged 70, but known for agility and security consciousness, and who was with his body guard during the incident.

An eyewitness said when the kidnappers saw Okeke coming out from the church, they went directly for him after firing shots to destabilise his security.

Okeke himself went for the front man of the kidnappers, brought him down, and collected his gun.

But before he could shoot, other kidnappers swooped on him from behind, and beat him with the butts of their guns.

It is widely believed that gunshots do not penetrate him.

It took over 10 minutes before the abductors could force Okeke into their car, after which they escaped through Awka Road, where they also fired gun shots into the air, throwing the commercial city into panic.

Onitsha Police Area Commander, John Nwele, confirmed that policemen are tracking the kidnappers.

Information and Culture Commissioner, Maja Umeh said Governor Peter Obi has contacted the security agencies over the matter, including Inspector General of Police, Ogbonanya Onovo, and Army Commanders.

Umeh said kidnappings another national crimes creeping into the state are unacceptable, and urged the police to contain the situation urgently.
Meanwhile, Obu urged the people to remain calm and go about their businesses, as the government will protect their lives and property.

With the spate of crime in this nation, I don't think it will be out of place to legalize individual ownership of arms. If we are all armed it might not be easy for some disgruntled elements to be taking the rest of us for a ride.
You couldn't believe that from information I had from some colleagues this morning, these kidnappers have extended their scope to even low income brackets demanding for ransom as low as NGN30,000 or thereabout. Where are we going?

Sign of the times in Nigeria – unfortunately kidnapping is now a profitable business in Nigeria, and quickly replacing 419. Gloomy days ahead for the politicians and elites – they must pressure the government to do more for the have-not. Mexico, Brazil, and other South American countries, have all had the same problem. The only solution would be providing basic sustenance for the poor, and jobs for our young people.

I really feel sorry for this country. The people of Niger Delta should stop insulting their good representative. The likes of Godwin Ubaka Okeke and Peter Edoche should be respected. They can steal, disgrace or even beat their political office holder who perharps represent them badly. These guys are just business man and don’t have much to gain from the petroleum.

Alhough, Kidnapping bz is now a real and good bz.  and not in the intrest of the people, it must therefore be stop,

But how do the kidnappers get the ransom money with the police unable to track them?it is not like it is a hidden issue, police are already aware from the onset,so all they need to do is track the ransom to the receivers and foil the operation by whatever means.

The bastards nigerian police just made kidnapping for ransom so easy.

Of course we know that almost 99 percent of nigeria mega rich are known thieves and kidnapping them is just a pay but at the same time police can make it a bit tough for kidnappers by doing a bit of detective work that normal police do,this is an age of GPS tracking and monitoring, yet people still get away with kidnapping as if it is child's play.

With every kidnap, successful or not, the image of Nigeria dips and the government, just as in everything else, seems not to have a solution to it.

What really is the pride of this nation?

When they release him now,he will open his mouth and tell us lies about the hospitability of the kidnappers just as Pete Edochie did.

Judging by his character,i think he deserves to kpeme for good,it is a good opportunity for getting rid of a nuisance like him.

Edochie was just a victim of actions of men like him, hooligans.
