Too bad you guys no dey give other people the same leeway and consideration.

Although we can not Ignore the National security implications but right now, it's mainly a south eastern Nigerian thing/phenomenon, deal with it and quit passing the buck as usual.

It's also a local problem, not a national problem. Joblessness and hopelessness is not limited to south eastern Nigeria so why kidnap and kill your own brothers and sisters for money?

This is nothing but greed, meanness, and gross social decay. There is a broken link and separation somewhere within the Igbo community, something that makes the life of a fellow Igbo man, woman and child dispensable and prized for monetary reward.

Unfortunately and as usual, this is gonna be blamed on other people and entities,

Awka — BARELY a week after the kidnap of a popular Nollywood actor, Chief Pete Edochie in Onitsha, Anambra state, another notable figure in the state, this time, a popular Onitsha based transporter and industrialist, Chief Godwin Okeke, popularly known as G.U.O, was kidnapped yesterday at about 9.45 am by armed men, numbering about 12 in front of All Saints Cathedral Onitsha.

Chief Okeke, who is the owner of GUO Transport Company, according to eyewitnesses was abducted immediately he came out of the Cathedral, were he had worshipped.

Unknown to the transported, the kidnappers had laid ambush for him, as he was said to have attended his usual 7am service at the Cathedral and immediately he came out of the cathedral gate, his captors swooped on him.

The kidnappers who operated with a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a Toyota Commuter bus, according to eyewitnesses, went to the Onitsha Central Police Station, where they allegedly dislodged the Police before striking at the Cathedral, which is just a stone throw from the station.

A typical luxury bus terminus.

His kidnapping was however, not without a struggle, as according to eyewitness, he (Okeke) gave them a tough battle before he was overpowered by the gunmen, who shot from the police station to adjoining streets in the area.

Okeke, about 70 years old, known for his agility and security consciousness, was said to have engaged the gunmen in a fierce battle, kicking one of them into the nearby gutter on the road and disarming another before his wife, who was in his company went for the gun of the one who fell into the gutter but was pushed away by one of the gunmen.

The eye witness further stated that Chief Okeke rushed to one of the kidnappers, dispossessed him of his gun and was about to fire before another one hit him from the butt of the gun, before taking back the gun from him.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Uzor Amakulor said he has not received detailed information but promised to brief newsmen latter.

Also the Onitsha Police Area Commander, Mr. John Nwele said he could not comment yet on the issue as they are on a hot chase of the kidnappers.

Harry Potter:

wait u ppl dont seems 2 understand the man they kidnaped,in the person of G U Okeke, is nothing but a treat 2 his fellow transporters and traders at onitsha main market.could you imagine he went and bribe the custom ppl 2 seize any goods coming 2 onitsha main market dat is not in his luxurious bus and mke the owner pay more than he was charged 4 his transporting.dis is pure greediness and wickedness and even the onitsha M M traders are happy 4 his abduction.
Ol'boy quit this rumor already please. Only the gullible ones just as you will believe this crap without thinking for themselves. Will GUO motors be able to cater for all passengers heading to Onitcha from all parts of nigeria? Do you know that all passengers heading to Eastern nigeria from other parts of nigeria by bus are in the range of over 500,000 per day? How many buses does GUO have that made him not to have enough market share? one thousand Buses to cater for all these passengers alone? Is his bus business lacking passengers? These are questions you have to ask your gullible self, not even to the source that you borrowed your stupid rumor from, before coming to this honorable forum to spread your nonsense.

OMG!! so sad.

i cannot go even to visit nigeria anymore without the fear of being kidnapped.
why cant they go back to 419 instead of hurting and harming and robbing all these people.
at least people get scammed because they are greedy and not because they have a gun to their head.
they ALL need to go back to 419 or do something else.
this is getting WAY out of hand.

GUO Okeke: Abductors demand N500m ransom
By Oluwole Farotimi
Tuesday, August 25, 2009

More Stories on This Section
Abductors of Onitsha, Anambra-based transport magnate, Chief Godwin Okeke, have placed a N500 million ransom tag on him.
A reliable family source, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen on Monday in Onitsha, that the family had established contacts with the abductors of the former OMATA president and chairman of the G.U.O. Group of Companies.

“We have established links with the kidnappers and they are insisting on N500 million ransom. “We have been making overtures to the kidnappers to bring down the ransom but the kidnappers have remained adamant. “The family and friends have been running around to raise the money,” the source disclosed.

Mr Uzor Amakulor, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, who also confirmed the N500 million ransom demand, confessed that the police had not made any major breakthrough to secure the release of Okeke in spite of frantic efforts.
The businessman was kidnapped at the All Saints Cathedral Church (Anglican), GRA Onitsha on Sunday as he was going for service at about 9:30 a.m.
Okeke, whose kidnap has raised fears among residents of Onitsha is described as an influential businessman in Anambra.

Also, there are fears among family members and associates of the businessman that abductors could harm him for challenging them when they accosted him.
Okeke is a former president of the Onitsha Amalgamated traders Association (OMATA), the umbrella body for all traders in Onitsha.

Something that disturbs me is the duality of faith.

This man was coming out of the church on a Sunday morning and gun shots couldn't penetrate his body.

Seems like serving God (by going to church) and the other one (by going to a native doctor for juju) at the same time.

How could bullets not have entered his body?may be they used dane guns and bullets.

However, they didn't want him dead because they needed him for the ransom money,so they could not have shot him.

Hmmmm, At age 70, the old geezer held off the rampaging gun totting youths for over 15 minutes? Was able to down a few in the ensuing scuffle? Well, seems to me this character could be a useful consultant for training the Nigeria Police! The cops we have now scamper at the sound of gunfire. They are in serious need of Chief Okeke's pep talk, grin grin
Re: Notable Transporter, G.U. Okeke Kidnapped! by AloyEmeka6: 6:32pm On Aug 25, 2009
I heard its just one gang group who were engaged in armed robbery but decided to stick to kidnapping because its more profitable. They work with the police and get first class information from Nigerian police department on whatever is their plans to arrest them. The information I am getting is that the governor and Anambra AIG  knows the gang and their boss but is afraid to take him down.  Pokobros paid N400M when he was kidnapped 2 months ago; Another Onitsha business man paid over N500 million; ABC transport paid around the same last year when they kidnapped his mother in law and there are rumors that GUO had to vomit over 300 million to save his head. I don't know how much Ifesinachi paid for his wife. They wouldn't make this amount robbing buses and banks. lipsrsealed
