Ekiti Workers Shun Meeting With Fayose, Insist On Strike by simtosul: 5:11am On Jun 01, 2016
Public workers in Ekiti State on Tuesday shunned the meeting called by the state government to resolve the ongoing strike in the state.

The workers on Thursday began an indefinite strike to press home the demand for the payment of five months’ salaries arrears of workers among other issues.

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday (yesterday), followed a declaration by Governor Ayodele Fayose to invoke the doctrine of “no-work, no-pay” in the face of labour’s insistence to continue with the strike.

It was to be attended by the chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, the Joint Negotiating Council, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools.

But the labour leaders failed to show up for the meeting. Instead, the secretaries of the NLC, TUC and JNC wrote the state government and asked for a new date, time and venue.

According to a copy of the letter sighted by our correspondent, the unions said the meeting should be rescheduled in the interest of peace. A leader of the labour told our correspondent that the unions took the decision because of the protest staged by driver unions against the strike earlier in the day.

“The leadership of organised labour has met this morning and resolved that in the interest of peace, security of life and property, the proposed meeting should be rescheduled to another day/date and venue,” the letter said.

Earlier on Tuesday, some artisans and commercial drivers, under the aegis of the Concerned Trade Unions in Ekiti State, had staged anti-workers’ protests in Ado Ekiti, accusing the leadership of labour of taking N25m bribe to destabilise the Fayose-led government.

The protesters, led by the Chairmen of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Agbede, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Clement Adekola, alleged that the ongoing strike was politically-motivated.

The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions, gathered at the popular Fajuyi Park and marched to the Ijigbo area of the state capital to mobilise support for Fayose’s government.

He will soon wake up and realize that Ekiti people can't be deceived for long.

He is so lazy upstairs and has no economic, agricultural, academic, scientific, or intellectual acumen to govern anything.

It is a pity that in this part of the world, anybody with no past history of clean record or achievement are allowed to preside over the affairs of a state.

Look at his tugs/touts protesting for nothing as if they can allow passengers board their vehicles twice without payments not to talk of months, they think those workers have no family to cater for. If there are people that collected bribe at all, these drivers are the first set of people to be accused , they are political prostitutes both the state workers and the touts.

Next election, state workers especially most of the teachers who are not intelligent will still be looking for a candidate they think will favor their requests.

Most of the protesting (supposed) workers are not even productive and the governor too not productive,. Maybe the Gov should sell his household to pay them. If they say they want to privatize every sector in the interest of productivity, they will still be protesting and even go on strike for being lazy, until we change our orientation from being lazy to being productive nothing positive will happen.

Some of them don't usually go to work as and when due, Nigerians and the government most of the times are deceiving themselves in the areas of productivity

I challenge all the workers to suggest way out of the economy meltdown to the governor since the governor has no technical knowledge of what to do if they have something positive upstairs.

I'm not a fan of fayose and I will never be one, but they supported him and praised him that he would go extra mile to pay their salaries as and when due, forgetting the economic reality of the country, they are just so gullible unintelligent and myopic in reasoning, are they expecting miracles from him?

As for fayose, you too think out of box and find something tangible doing instead of unproductively criticizing PMB, use your brain positively and maintain decorum, you can't be praised by any reasonable man because you are always looking for cheap popularity. If you continue this way, your reigns might go down faster than you and your blind supporters envisage, be responsible, be objective and be reasonable at least some time.

How can a reasonable person say workers who have not been paid for over 5 months are on politically motivated strike? So, they should die at home quietly instead of embarking on strike to press for the payment of their salaries? Samuel Agbede and Clement Adekola should be publicly flogged for spewing this trash.

Thank God you said a reasonable person, did he tell you he is a reasonable person. Let all the roads be blocked completely just for two days by soldiers and see if they (drivers) won't be crying

He who eats the RICE must pay the PRICE. Fayose hasn't even spend two years, they are complaining.

Where are those always castigating Aregbe? Yesterday, a thread was created to showcase his project, I didn't many comments, at least we know why he couldn't pay salaries. I thought Fayose is the best governor?

Fayose is an indictment on the intelligent people of Ekiti.

We are yet to hear from Fayose that it was APC and Buhari that has brought the doom of not paying Ekiti workers.

And why didn't this Fayose - Prophet of doom foresee that Ekiti workers will go on strike. Ewu!

What do u expect D agberos to think?? Fayose is their mentor.they and fayose normally meets at paraga joints..its just a shame that touts has now been ranked above the civil servants in the state..can u imagine these miscreants holding unreasonable protest that the govt workers should not av strike for not paying them?

Onpe for Ekiti people, thats one of the reasons my friend left that place, she said being jobless in Lagos is still better for her and she doesn't even want to think too much about what Ekiti has turned into, she also said hotels and beer parlors are the most employers of labour and of course olosho work for students. If Ekiti has the most number of professors in Nigeria, how come they are still very backward and went for stomach infrastructure instead of choosing the better of two devils. #braceupEkitipeople #onpe
