By Inibehe Effiong,

Constitutionally, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) has all the powers vested in the president and can exercise them without recourse to the president.

He can do whatever the president can do during the ten days period of his ‘Acting presidency’, including dissolution of cabinet, appointment and dismissal of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ministers, heads of MDAs, etc.

He can declare war between Nigeria and any other country or a state of emergency in the whole or part of the country. He can sign bills passed by the National Assembly into law.

However, we know that in Nigeria this only possible in theory.

In practice, the Acting president can only do what the president wants him to do or what the president would have done.

It is even possible that the Acting president may be a figurehead who merely takes instructions from a de facto president during the temporary absence of the president.

The de facto president can be the wife of the president, Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government or any other close ally of the president.

Let us see what Osinbajo will do differently during his ten days reign.
