The ongoing trial of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over alleged forgery, on Saturday sparked massive protests in his constituency, Enugu West Senatorial Zone.
Ekweremadu, and Senate President, Bukola Saraki, are being tried by the Federal Government for allegedly forging the Senate Rules.
The duo have already been arraigned, and are currently on bail.
However, the Deputy Senate President’s constituents took to the streets on Saturday to condemn the trial, which they described as politically motivated persecution.
Thousands of people in the constituency gathered in Awgu, where they chanted solidarity songs and brandished placards, demanding the cessation of the trial.
In a communique issued after the rally, they called on the international community to act immediately to stop what they described as the dangerous slide to democratic dictatorship and anarchy in the country.
The communique, which was read by a traditional ruler from the area, Igwe Professor Sam Ukpabi, noted that Ekweremadu’s emergence as Deputy Senate President followed due process.
The protesters, in the communique, accused a ‘cabal’ in the All Progressives Congress of persecuting Ekweremadu.
They warned that the said cabal would be held responsible if anything happened to the senator.
Ekweremadu had earlier appealed to the international community to intervene in his trial.
In a letter to the United Nations, the United States, United Kingdom and other countries, he raised the alarm that Nigeria’s democracy was under threat.

Silly fools always protesting for a more foolish arrogant big man while their immediate neighbor's rights are being violated without any resistance from them. Poverty must be defeated.

Where did the protest take place? Is it in Iboland? If yes, no surprises: these people are the greatest protectors of corruption and official lootermania!
