M-46 130mm guns upgraded to fire 155mm 45 calibre rounds
One of the most effective guns ever produced.

Prior to the introduction of the G5 155mm howitzer into service with the South African army the only gun offering better range was the heavy M107 175mm howitzer(American). Besides it's long range the M-46 was deadly accurate.

Meaning at times though massive it could be used as a direct fire and anti-tank weapon.

The South African army captured some in Angola. They might be possibility handed to then Kwachas.

kalyani upgrade of the 1970s 105MM IFG. The upgraded Gun is almost brand new system after the upgrade, It not only lighten the whole system by a large margin but also added much needed electronic fire-control, Such improvement will make it more independent in providing fire-support as a platform itself and not part of a battery to do the same task.

yes the writer makes a case for a single engined light category fighter but not at the expense of medium/heavy category twin engined fighter.

day to day activities of an air force cannot be fullfiled by HWF/MWF as the cost in terms of money , spares , maintenance attrition etc will be huge and not sustainable even for rich countries.

that is why depending on ur budget u will have to operate only LWF or combination of LWF and MWF/HWF.

the writer is making a case for LWF specifically a 5 generation stealth light weight single engine fighter, which has not been attempted anywhere in the world till now.
hope he succeeds

I agree, he does make a compelling argument.

“Quartered in snow, silent to remain, when the bugle calls, they shall rise and march again.” These are the words that are etched on a stone memorial at the Indian Army base camp in Siachen – the world’s highest and coldest active war zone. For over 17 hellishly freezing years, the Indian army has held the position strong, keeping the neighboring enemies from claiming the glacier. The sun doesn’t sustain life here, kerosene does. The bullet doesn’t kill here, the cold does, but our brave hearts take all of this face front and never back down.

Siachen Glacier is a vital strategic location which overlooks the supply routes to Kashmir. When RAW found out that the Pakistani Army is trying to occupy it – deducing it from their order for a large supply of mountaineering equipment and so forth – so the Indian Army quickly got the required equipment and took over the Glacier. This is how the Siachen Conflict started.

1) Siachen Glacier is the world’s most highest and most extreme war zone.Sometimes Indian soldiers, as many as 6 at a time, have to live in igloos made of fiberglass panels no bigger than the size of a king-size bed. The only way to keep themselves warm is through small kerosene stoves. The smoke fills the igloos so much so that it colours everything including even a man's spit. Hot water bottles don’t stay hot for long, sleeping doesn’t happen at night, and a relay mechanism is set up to exchange frozen rifles with defrosted ones.

2) Soldiers at this war zone serve amidst a temperature ranging from -50 degree celsius to – 60 degree celsius.Snowstorms on the Siachen glacier can last for as long as 3 weeks. Winds here can touch speeds of 100 mph in no time.

3) Most of the soldiers die because of exrtreme weather conditions rather than cross firing.Sometimes called the “Third Pole,” the Siachen Glacier stretches nearly 50 miles along the eastern Karakoram Range in the Kashmir region The glacier’s craggy landscape, paper-thin air, heavy snowfall and bone-chilling temperatures make it one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

4) In Siachen, the weather is so harsh that you are at the risk of getting a deadly frostbite if your bare skin touches steel (gun trigger, for example) for just over fifteen seconds.Since temperatures usually dip well below −50 °C, touching anything made of metal with bare hands can cause severe frost bites within seconds. Guns and other artillery are only operated while wearing anti-frostbite gloves. Even the sweat in the gloves freezes to become ice, sometimes leading to finger amputations. Soldiers brought down to base camp often suffer problems of hearing, eyesight and memory loss because of prolonged use of oxygen masks.

5) Mountain climbers climb when the weather is at its best; soldiers serve in these treacherous terrains all year round. The snow storms can last well up to more than half a month and the place has about 10 percent of the oxygen that plains have. While even professional climbers dread climbing in bad weather, soldiers are on their feet, patrolling the area 365 days a year.

6) Siachen Glacier is the world’s most highest and most extreme war zone.Army pilots literally push their helicopters well beyond their optimal performance, to drop supplies at forward posts located at an altitude of more than 20,000 feet.

7) Siachen is the world’s largest non polar glacier

8 ) The normal oxygen level in this war zone is just about 10% of the oxygen levels at the plains.

9) It is situated at altitude of 5400 metres, which is twice that of Ladakh and Kargil

10) Human body cannot adapt at such an altitude of 5400 meteres.Indian soldiers who stay at that altitude for long suffer from weight loss, loss of appetite, sleep disorders and memory loss. Speech blurring is obvious.

11) In Siachen, the Indian Army spends as much as 80% of its time preparing soldiers of deployment.

12) Speech problems, nausea, sleep deprivation and depression are some of the most common problems our soldiers face in the winters. Despite such difficulties, the Indian Army holds two-thirds of the glacier and controls two of the three most important passes including the highest motorable pass in the world called Khardungla Pass.

13) Helicopters have only 20 to 30 seconds to drop food and other supplies to the soldiers.Fresh food is a rare luxury at Siachen. Fruits freeze to become as hard as cricket balls and potatoes can’t be dented even with hammers. Getting the food at an altitude of 21,000 feet is a task in itself. Indian-made Cheetah helicopters often push well past their boundaries to drop in canned food. And if, God forbid, the weather is bad, a lot of food is swallowed by the snow.

14) Annual snowfall in Siachen is over 3 dozen feet.Facing almost 35 feet of snow and blizzards year round, the soldiers not only protect the territory from enemies but also, manually maintain (with shovels and light machinery) the post which otherwise will be swallowed by the accumulating snow if left unmanned.

15) Rifles and machine guns have to defrosted immediately in boiling water, to prevent them from jamming.Due to ghastly winds at 18,000 feet, mortar shelling becomes extremely unpredictable, sometimes falling where least expected. Rifles are thawed repeatedly over kerosene stoves and machine guns are dipped in boiling water to keep them from jamming. But soldiers fall prey to the camouflaging snow sheets and unexpected avalanches and blizzards more often than to the shelling.

16) American and pakistan tactics to snatch siachen glacier from India gave a brand-new word—“oropolitics,” which means mountaineering for political purposes.

17)India built the world’s highest helipad—at Fort Sonam, 21,000 feet above sea level. India also installed the world’s highest telephone booth on the glacier.

18) In the last 30 years, 846 soldiers have sacrificed their lives at Siachen. the picture below shows the site where a 10 men patrol team was hit by an avalanche

19) Death of these soldiers are declared as war casualties although they die due to severe climate and not because of war.

MILITARY GRADE FUNNY MOMENTS

Kargil war!

The Sikh regiment was climbing a hill in the Kargil sector during the war when suddenly from the direction of the summit the Pakistani troops opened fire on them. The Sikh regiment took cover behind boulders and started to return the firing. The firing continued for a long time and no progress was made so the Sikh regiment's captain thought that since the names of almost all the pakistani soldiers are like yusuf, iqbal, mustafa etc. he'll call out their names and the moment they react to the call we'll shoot them.

So he started calling out-"Yusuf" four hands shot up and they were gunned down. Then the captain called out-"iqbal" three hands shot up and they were gunned down this continued for a few more minutes till the Pakistani's got wise and stopped responding.

The Pakistani captain then thought that at this rate all his men would be killed so he adopted the strategy of the Sikh captain and thought that all Sikhs have names rhyming with Inder like Sukhwinder, Devender, Jaswinder etc.

So the Pakistani captain started calling out "Sukhwinder" no hands shot up from the Indian side. The Pakistani captain again called out-"Sukhwinder" still no hands shot up.

The Pakistani captain called out the same name twice again when instantly came the reply that- "Oye Sukhwinder nu kaun yaad kar-riya si?" (who is remembering Sukhwinder?).

The Pakistani commander immediately shot up his hand and said- "Main" (me) and BANG he was shot dead.
