Two, even before this time, I have always recommend two kids. We already have a population explosion issue. A lot of kids are unnecessarily born into poverty. Part of the issue in the north and middle east is uncontrolled births and failed parenting.

Start with two, if you become more prosperous later on in life have more or adopt a child to better his/her lot.

There is nothing more profoundly annoying than seeing people who can hardly take care of themselves with 5,6,7 kids and the wife carrying a less than 2year old child while u can spot a growing belly. I get so infuriated! But let me not digress. To answer your question, everyone should stick to 2 (well spaced) with 3 being the maximum.
