Well, now that common sense has prevailed and the federal government is set to resume the monthly stipends paid to Niger Delta militants who lay down their arms, PEACE will prevail once again, in the Niger delta, and in the creeks of Lagos Lagoon.

All the anarchy that led up to last week's unprecedented helicopter gunship strafing of oil pipeline bandito camps located amidst creeks within earshot of Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, could have been avoided entirely by the simple expedient of NOT stopping those monthly consultancy fees paid to the natives of the oil field swamps.

The simple truth is that the environmental damage caused by 50 years of oil exploration and leaking pipelines has foreclosed all fishing and agricultural opportunities for those residing in the immediate vicinity of the oil fields. By recognizing that the deprived people of the Niger Delta MUST be paid ADEQUATE AMOUNTS in cash for the rest of their lives, common sense has finally prevailed, and the shooting will stop in very short order, once the boys start to see those compensatory pay checks as they did without fail under the previous administration headed by the hero of democracy, Johnny B. Goode.

How I wish all the ijaw militants (ex and current) can be killed (with missiles from Apache Helicopters) so as to save the billions wasted on amnesty for criminals.

Isn't it better to have invested this allowance of $400/head/month paid for the past 7 years into cleaning up all the spills.

The payment CANNOT be indefinite. It has to stop.

7 years of amnesty salary hasn't stopped the oil spill and you are still advocating for continued payments...

Very soon 50 years of amnesty payments will pass and no single community will be cleaned up...

Isn't that better than adequate payment for the rest of their lives... Though this is why oil producing States have derivation funds paid, but as usual, it's misappropriated.

The ND people are not yet serious as far as I am concerned.

Not anyone of the numerous group is demanding clean up of spills. Nobody is demanding for industries in every community (no State or LGA.. Community is what I typed). Not a single red cap chief is demanding free education till SSCE level for every child. Not a single person is demanding that health care should be free from birth till 6 years and above 65years...

Guys, be smart. Akpabio built a stadium that bulk of the construction cost went to companies whose management and staff don't live, work or have a single investment in the ND. They are all in Lagos, Abuja and outside the country.

No BRT. No Train. No AutoBahn, No Sea Port, Nothing upon nothing...

The extremely rich (legitimate and illegitimate) ND don't even invest in the ND... They have HEAVY investment in the North and South West of Nigeria

Here you are advocating monthly payment... Shameful!

The cleanup of the oil spillage in Nigeria's oil fields will take a couple of lifetimes, and will ONLY be possible if there is the kind of peace that can best be purchased by monthly installments made to the local people deprived for decades of their traditional modes of sustenance through fishing and agriculture.

Certainly, many of the ruptured oil pipelines in the Niger Delta were and are intentionally blown open in acts of sabotage and theft by starving people, just as many major oil spillages arose from rusting pipes and infrastructure resulting from decades of neglect by successive past administrations.

So, rather than continue to penalize and persecute Niger Delta's impoverished natives for pollution arising from multiple causative factors, keep them on the payroll so that at the very least, routine maintenance of the nations oil infrastructure can be carried out without the persistent fear of armed attack, as is the case currently. The fraction of the oil income stream that it would take to disburse stipends to every adult resident of the oil states would STILL amount to a tiny bite taken from the net income accrued out of oil export proceeds that can only be maximized under conditions of lasting peace.
