Senator Ali Ndume made a shocking claim stating that the Nigerian national Assembly is broke and is having problems meeting up with its financial obligations.

Ndume said this in reaction to newspaper reports that the legislature was facing financial challenges, he said that the situation was so worrisome that legislators were not receiving their allowances as and when due.

“I know that the whole country is in financial difficulty, not only National Assembly.

I have been in the National Assembly since 2003 but things keep getting worse; I think they paid us last month’s salary on the 16th of the following month or thereabouts,” Ndume told newsmen in Abuja.

He said it wasn’t only lawmakers facing this problem, but other arms of the government are also facing a lack of funds.

“It is not only with the National Assembly, some states have not been able to pay salaries for six months, one year.

Some states were even asking their workers to go and farm for two days and work for the other three days in a week.

Even in the Presidency, they have tightened their belts on their expenditure and so, it’s a general phenomenon in the country.

We used to receive running costs or allowances quarterly but now it is monthly and it doesn’t come as and when due,” he said.

He also hit out at claims that lawmakers had an easy life and also stated that the presumption that lawmakers were corrupt is a false one.

“If the national assembly is so corrupt and you can make much money, then tell me one national assembly member that is living in luxury after leaving office.

Some of my colleagues who lost out in the 2015 election are struggling to pay their children’s school fees, some of them are even struggling to take care of their health.

If national assembly was where you come and make a lot of money, how come one year after leaving you cannot meet your basic needs,” he said.

Senator Ali Ndume has just succeeded in exposing the level of mediocrity and myopia exhibited by our "undistinguished" Senators since 1999 (perhaps beyond). Despite the largesse enjoyed by its members and allegations of grand sleaze we hear everyday, the average ex-senator is unable to fend for itself (in the post-senate). That's why majority of them will choose to remain there for life (some have even ended their terrestrial lives there)
This epitomises the "blood sucking" and parasitic nature of the national assembly.
In my opinion, both houses should be scrapped or merged into one. If charity must begin at home, then our elected representatives should lead by working on a part time basis or at best be at par with the renumeration of level 17 officers.
Chikena!!!

The reason is simple Mr Ndume;
They all lived extravagant lifestyles but can no longer sustain it because previously available avenues thru which they ra ped the treasury thru phoney contracts that continued running even after they leave office have been blocked.

I don't wanna hear their stupid complaints about being broke.

If they had been more prudent in choosing good competent leadership, I am sure the finances would be in better order than they are at present.

Instead they wasted N40 billions purchasing luxury cars.
Billions attending unnecessary retreats.
Billions to continue overpaying themselves.
Their leadership refused to apply the TSA policy to their finances.
Their leadership has avoided presenting a breakdown of their budget for public scrutiny.

I don't wanna hear you are broke! If you cannot fix it resign!

When 109 thieves gathered together to share resources and sweats of common man, and they still claim such resources is not enough for doing little or nothing. Looting of Nigeria will never stop until we find solution to our policies. All they are after is money, no creativity whatsoever. Thunder fire u people o

These is the kind of news I love to read/listen to. Their pot bellies are grave yard of countless rivers of pepper soups and bear... seeking to lose weight, while the poor are struggling to gain same weight....Some of them even need an iron girdle, to compress the solidification of their molten stomachs... The usual route you loot has been block. But if truly you people are broke then.... tongue tongue tongue

OK, that is why the budget needed to be padded.when u guys were busying asking for furniture allowance, bedroom allowance e.t.c you didn't know the country was broke
The cost of governance in this country is way too expensive. Crazily expensive, even when the country is broke we can't still curtail it. Nigeria is a joke for now, mods pls move this to joke section
