actually not just Catholics...anybody who feels she wants her prayer. Because Christ is alive she is alive in heaven. It is only her human body that died awaiting the resurrection. Her soul found worthy to behold the beatific vision- the presence of God. In the catacombs one sees the inscription at the tomb of the martyrs asking their intercession...if Christ could say Abraham Isaacs and Jacob are alive then making the Heavenly Father, God of the living and not of the dead, then our faith in the church-the bride of Christ through her infallible teaching authorities bestowed on her by Christ in Matt. 16:18(first on St. Peter) and then in Matt. 18:18ff( on rest of the Apostles) is strengthened. It is same authority of binding and loosing the Catholic Church exercised in determining the canons of the scripture in councils of Hippo (393 A.D.) and carthage (397 A.D.) which she named the Bible and handed same to successor of St. Peter, Pope Damasus in Rome for approval. Except you can confirm that it was your church's GO who decreed the biblical canon in AD 382, or your church convened the synod of AD 393 or 397(Hippo, Carthage) that further confirmed the canon, then yes the Authority of the Catholic Church.
