Education teaches you how to learn and how to be open minded and reasearch be4 believing anything, so passing thru the walls of a classroom is not enuf, besides, in nigeria, there are so many people with the so called degrees that never passed one exams, but they know how to decode the proffs.

Since illiteracy means lack of education, then it should follow that literacy is the presence of some level of education. Some people with mere primary-level education can boast of being literate especially if they learnt their book well .

However those with higher levels of education of course can be more "cultured" or functional in both everyday and specialist situations. But only, of course, if they too learnt their own book well .

My uncle calls my aunt illiterate because she did not graduate college, but to me she is way more "cultured" and successful funny thing is even with his Masters he works for her. I jus think its a way of putting her down.

Literacy is simply the ability to read and write and that is contextual because you can read and write in Yoruba (for e.g.) , but not in English. You need not attend a formal education to be literate in some field while you may need do so in others. You can have a nanny who teaches you how to read and write in any language, then by all means you are literate in that Language. Just like most of us are computer literate through self help, with no formal education in computing/computer science.

Can your auntie read and write? If so, she is not illiterate. Can she add, subtract, divide and multiply? If so, she is also not arithmetic illiterate.

some people pass through school but the school doesnt pass through them.
