I think advising people to spend more in an import dependent economy is no way to boost it.

The US got of recession by increasing government spending.

Op your write up is a bit of crap and it shows that you are lack of economic ideas. You are advising a country experiencing recession to reduce spending which will in turn slower the economy growth rate.I think you are one of these APC stewards or disciples who are blinded because of their loyalty to the Fulani Ruler who lacks the capacity to run a large economy in the 21st century. The current problem bedeviling this nation is that too much money is been withheld by few Nigerians who are scared of spending it in a draconian and dictatorship regime that does not give room for people to create wealth freely. It is only when when this govt decide to change its lopsided approach to tackling corruption before things can improve for the betterment of Nigerians otherwise we have to wait for another 3 years when a more capable leader will emerge.

So you mean economy thrive by reckless spending? and this topic isn't worth it?
Guy spread this your economic sermon to the looters.

They only ended up boosting Chinese economy, for those who knows what U.S. economy used to be before Clinton sold it to China, this is not close to enough 21 trillion -$19 trillion in U.S. Debt, that's 2trillion in asset. That's not a strong economy they are just living on the back of fools like us who can't industrialize our economy, thereby making $ relevant .

In other words, it is a win win situation for both countries. Anything wrong with that?

No it's not China keep winning with trade surplus, U.S. Keep losing with trade deficit . It's evident on the streets of Detroit and Ohio .

What Detroit and Ohio are experiencing is effect of labor mobility. American does not depend on factory jobs anymore. Science, technology and health care have taken over. Therefore there is a pull of labor to other cities/states which are hubs for these 21st century workforce. It has nothing to do with China. Go to Houston, Boston, California and see for yourself how vibrant those places are. What does that tell you? The answer is simple; true federalism, where states develop at their own pace.

No sir, what the problem is, is unchecked globalization where employers take advantage of cheap labor world wide to put people out of work, yes I have been to those cities you just mentioned, what I see is dot com jobs growing for those millennial who are building a new career in that field. Whatever happens to the good old manufacturing jobs that need no robots, don't tell me they are not their because they are, as companies have just started moving to Mexico , eg career air conditioners. Why are they moving? Because U.S. Don't have enough people with tech. Knowledge ? obviously not

You made mention of medical field, I m thinking that's where you are ? That explains your position . Charging people arm and a leg for 3 hour hospital visit that cost a fraction in a country like UK or Canada is a mare stupidity, which will begin to manifest when countries like Nigeria begins to be industrialized and all the worthless paper called $ shipped back to u.s reserve. Then we shall know the true nature American economy . Until then U.S remains the nation with the highest debt in the world how that is smart economy to you only time will tell.

It was not my intention to extend this discussion to the effect of neocolonialism on African countries particularly Nigeria. Africa as we know only serves as source for cheap raw naturals for developed countries, and these Western countries would do anything to maintain that status quo. They benefit immensely from this and would never let go. The result is unfair trade between developed and under develop nations. Think of it this way, a bar of chocolate in retail stores cost about $1 which is almost #400 naira by today's exchange rate. In comparison, a cocoa farm worker in Akure or Ikom cocoa producing area in Nigeria would be glad to work one full day just to be paid an amount equal to this price of one chocolate bar! The question then is, why are we selling our raw materials cheap rather than adding value to them, in order to get fair price from finished products. This is the same reason why Nigeria is still where it is today. They export crude oil and import petrol, this is just insane. lipsrsealed

I agree with you that the cost of health care in the US is high when compared to other places. However, when the factors driving these costs are analyzed, they seem to be justified. It is not just about getting treatment but the added services a patient gets when treated in US is beyond comparison. When one considers the follow up visits, malpractice insurance, liability, specialist consultation, and the cost of coordinating the network of specialty providers, then the cost would be appreciated. When a country leads in innovations in treatments, cost tend to be high because they must break even.

On a last note, do not expect the "old good manufacturing jobs" to surface again because robots/automation is more efficient to use.

No sir. The OP is right.

U are the one who lacks sound economic principles. U cannot spend what u don't have. The OP is simply saying u shud spend on necessities only. If all economic activities are centred on necessities in this critical period, then economic growth is assured (cos u focus production on necessities, I focus consumption on necessities too) then we will soon be out of the recession.
Today, my wife, in preparation for the new school year purchased 3 new lunch boxes, for my two kids and myself (for work). I informed her that mine was not necessary cos my old lunch box was still serviceable. She was claiming it was old and unsightly. This is a clear example of unnecessary spending which we should avoid in times like this.
