Nigeria may soon lose the special treatment on issues of trade with Europe should it continue to drag its feet on the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Economic Communities of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and the European Union (EU). http://breaking.com.ng/nigeria/nigeria-eu-trade-in-danger-as-buhari-drags-feet-in-signing-economic-partnership-agreement/ |

megawax8: The problem is that our manufacturing sector and other small scale sectors will be totally wiped out if Nigeria agrees to the EPA rubbish. It is even the manufacturing sector that is against the idea not just the FG. Imagine companies like Nestle and others who have huge manufacturing plants here competing with their rivals from Europe. If we truly want to industrialize as a nation, Nigeria should never go near that EPA deal. I have been in meetings where this have been analysed and discussed extensively. MAN [Manufacturing association] will never support the idea especially in these days of trying to encourage made in Nigeria products, going near the EPA deal will be a contradiction then me and you will come back here to lambast govt of not protecting Nigeria's businesses. 1 Like |

After the devaluation of naira, raising of interest rate, the next pressure and propaganda from the foreign countries is to cajole and force the Nigeria to sign the EPA agreement. The plan was to remove our industrial competitive advantage, once that is done...the short term economic incentives to import European products and others will resurface and kill our industrialization growth. The government should, as a matter of national priority and importance not sign this agreement. By signing this agreement; it will make our economy more import dependent, weakens our industrialization exercise and further increases the probability of job losses due to industry retrenchment. |
