At last, Lagos City Hall wears new look

Lagos City Hall, the foremost seat of local government council administration in Nigeria which got burnt some years ago is now wearing a new look. The total reconstruction of the Lagos Island Local Government Secretariat and finishing with the state of the art building materials have transformed the edifice into an ultra-modern structure. With this development the four-storey complex has been restored to its former pride of place as one of the historic buildings in Nigeria.

The facelift given the badly burnt building came courtesy of the Lagos State government as an expression of its strong commitment towards the provision of modern day infrastructural facilities that will improve the economic well-being of its citizenry as well as meet the challenges of Lagos as a mega city.

The new look City Hall now has granite marble floors in all its public areas, vitrified floor tiles for offices and corridor, high quality sanitary fittings and replacement of internal and external curtain walls. It also has service facilities like central air conditioning, CCTV, four lifts, four standby generators, central sewage treatment plant, two bore holes and water treatment facilities provided within a well secured site. It was one of the projects inspected during a recent inspection tour by Engineer Ganiyu Johnson who is the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure to Governor Babatunde Fashola.

Other projects inspected in Lagos Island Local Government Council Area during the tour included construction of Elegbeta Recreation Ground, Construction of E-Learning Centre CBD, Construction of combined Magistrate and High Courts in Igbosere, construction of Osborne Jetty and rehabilitation of Oba’s palace.

At the Elegbeta Recreation Ground, Engr. Johnson said the construction was conceived towards promoting sporting activities among the youths and to further boost this administration’s policy of recreation. The Recreation Ground comprises facilities such as spectators stand, three Astro-turf pitches and flood lighting.

At E- learning Centre CBD in Lagos Island, Engr. Johnson decried a situation where the library was for long abandoned as he recalled with nostalgia that it was a place where many Lagosians studied in comfort. But he assured that the new project was an improvement over the former library which was a two- storey building, saying the new has been upgraded into a three storey building with a dome-like exhibition hall at the upper floor.

The new building now has a facade with the use of trapezoidal fins, while the external walls will be decorated with brown mosaic tiles.

Speaking further Engr. Johnson said the Library is being upgraded to international standard and will be electronic-controlled. The Library has more spaces and height, with different partitioning for the use of children and adult. The project is due for handing over by the end of November, 2009.

The construction of the combined Magistrate and High Court, Igbosere also gave the inpection team much to cheer. The main building consists of 24 court rooms spread on four suspended floor slabs with ancillary facilities, which include withholding cell, canteen, gatehouse, ramp (for the physically-challenged) and a generator-house. According to Engr. Johnson, the project is to complement and enhance quick dispensation of justice in the State.

At the construction of a jetty and terminal building at Osborne, Ikoyi, the Special Adviser disclosed that the project was conceived to develop an effective water transportation system for the State. The contract of the construction of the jetty and terminal building at Osborne Ikoyi, was awarded to Messer Hi-tech Construction Company limited. It has a proto-type design similar to the on-going jetties at Ipakodo and Badore.

The scope of work entails reclamation, dredging, piling, construction of terminal building, jetty deck, sheet piling, earth works/road works, storm water drainage works, construction of box culvert, construction of public convenience, land scaping and beautification.

Engr. Johnson confirmed to journalists that works being carried out at the Badore and Ipakodo Jetty terminals would be replicated at the site. The project would be handed over for the use of Lagosians at the end of 1st quarter of year 2010.
