DUKA AND SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
ecent write-ups contained in the Anambra State Association USA Yahoo Group, and some Nigerian Daily Newspapers against Dr. Godwin Maduka, and his efforts in transforming the Umuchukwu community, prompted this response. These articles about Dr Maduka appear to be written by the agents of under development and enemies of progress, who hail from the same community with him.

advertisement
These agents centered their allegations against Dr. Maduka on the following:

That he single-handedly and without due process, changed the name of their town form Nkerehi to Umuchukwu;
That he used the "Divide- and- Rule" tactics to incite brothers against brothers, or create divisions in some of the families in the community;
That he physically abused, or authorized the physical abuse of the town's prominent indigenes, who opposed his transformational efforts, and
That he authorized the dismantling of the town's idols, common market, and the defacement of the entire community.
My thorough investigation of the afore-mentioned charges revealed hollowness, crass ignorance, naiveté, as well as envy on the part of his accusers. The story is hereby presented as it actually happened. The change of the town's name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu was by referendum conducted by Anambra State Government of the Nigeria. Mazi Dubem Obaze, Special Adviser to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State on Local Government Affairs, confirmed that the change occurred by referendum by the provision of relevant documents. These documents equally showed that the local, state and federal governments of Nigeria clearly supported the change of the town's name to Umuchukwu,and gazzetted. Most importantly, and besides Dubem Obaze's documentary validation of the referendum, is that the government of Mr. Peter Obi, which firmly believes in the rule of law, and due process, can not afford to look in another direction, while one man takes the laws into his hands by terrorizing his fellow-being or destabilizing his community.

Regarding Dr. Maduka's alleged use of "divide- and- rule" tactics, to divide folks and families in the community, especially via the extension of micro finance credit to the indigenes of the community, I also found that to be completely false and untenable. Dr. Maduka disbursed and still disburses funds to his beneficiaries strictly based on needs. Dr. Maduka is very frugal and works extremely had for his money. He gets up early in the morning, and comes home late at night, bone-weary. He consistently requests that his beneficiaries submit proposals which are examined and approved, before giving out any financial assistance. He has equally turned down requests from other financial seekers, who could not articulate constructive usage of the money. The accusation of using money to divide families collapsed like a pack of cards because more and more people are still requesting financial help from him on an endless basis. What is the basis for seeking his financial help if it has broken up families in the community? It is also sufficient to state that some of the projects he executed in the community were thoroughly studied and planned, before execution, and not embarked upon or executed with fanfare and for self-aggrandizement.

As for the alleged physical abuse of some of the town's indigenes, who provided obstacles to the development of the community, Dr. Maduka stated unequivocally that he could not recall to have engaged in such acts or even authorized them .My additional investigations revealed that Dr. Maduka contributed his best to stop such incidents when they were brought to his knowledge. As a humble and well-cultured gentleman, Dr. Maduka renounced the violence that erupted and apologized to the victims. He also assured them that he was simply interested in the progress of the community, and extended the hands of brotherhood to them to ensure that Umuchukwu town is left better that it was found.

The accusation of dismantling the town's idols and defacement of the community was easily debunked by the fact that a committee was formed by Igwe Michael Ukaegbu, and his cabinet chiefs to map out project sites in the community. Members of the Committee executed their assignment and submitted it to the Igwe and his cabinet chiefs, who in turn, approved the sites, where the projects were built. It would interest all genuine lovers of progress to appreciate that His Highness, Igwe Michael Ukaegbu, is the maternal uncle of Dr. Maduka. Thus, it would be preposterous and sacrilegious for Dr. Maduka to commit all he was accused of in a community that is under the watch of his uncle. Knowing Dr. Maduka, and his value systems, which include empathy, and respect for constituted authority, he would invest the best of efforts to ensure that landmark transformations in all facets of life would be witnessed under the watch of his uncle, as the Igwe of the community.

Having successfully debunked the aforementioned charges against Dr. Maduka, it is pertinent to urge all his traducers to sheathe their swords, and appreciate that Dr. Maduka is a God- sent biblical Nehemiah to Umuchukwu. He simply wants to convert Umuchukwu into a Jerusalem, for the benefit of all in the community. His motto for development, of the community can be likened to the biblical injunction of "Let Us Rise and Build," contained in Nehemiah, Chapter 2 Verse 18. Dr. Maduka is also highly interested in creating a "polis," which is defined as a community of human beings cooperating with each other to satisfy their needs and to promote their common welfare.

Dr. Maduka's Horatio Algier's story provides him the impetus to embark on the positive transformation of his community. He replicates the good nature and kindness of Mr. Warren Edward Buffett, the American Insurance guru, who recently doled out a financial largess of $37.4 billion dollars to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to ensure the eradication of diseases in the third world. If Mr. Buffett was hailed world-wide for his generosity, why would Dr. Maduka be pilloried or castigated in his efforts to better his community or benefit his fellow indigenes with his money?

Dr. Maduka embodies the biblical injunction of Galatians, Chapter 6 Verse 2, which reads thus: "Bear each other's cross for the sake of Christ". He also exemplifies two quotations attributed to the late eloquent Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of America, which respectively stated that: "Life's most consistent question is what we do for others… An individual has not started living until he or she moves from the narrow confines of his or her individual needs to the broader concerns of the community". Dr. Maduka personally confided in me that he was equally inspired to uplift his community because of the philanthropic acts of the late Igwe M.N. Ugochukwu, Abilikete I of Umunze, and the Late Igwe T.N. Madu, Onyia Mbelede I of Owerri-Ezukala in their respective communities. Both of the late Igwes awarded scholarships to their indigenes, established cottage industries that provided employments and also provided amenities in their respective towns. Dr. Maduka, in my discussions with him, wondered as Thomas Jefferson, the third President of America once questioned: "What is in individual glory when one's community is in peril?" He pleaded with the indigenes of his community to understand that a better society occurs through individuals with problem-solving capabilities, and advised that support be given to the individuals to achieve their objectives. He also advised them to appreciate that most successful people are always in the habit of looking for opportuinities to help others.

The consolations for Dr. Maduka are legion. Chief among them is for him to ignore the antics of his traducers, and embrace the biblical injunction of Acts, Chapter 20 Verse 35, which reads thus: "It is more blessed to give than receive." He also needs to appreciate that life is made by what is given. Another consolation is that the study of dialectical materialism revealed that progress emanates out of conflicts or struggles. A more serious source of consolation for Dr. Maduka is that his name is already and perpetually etched in gold, because all progressive and decent minded individuals and groups, such as the clerics, politicians, and other philanthropists are fully supportive and appreciative of his philanthropic acts in the community. An apt example of the appreciation of his generosity can be gleaned from the remarks attributed to Princess Ugochukwu, of Anambra State House of Assembly, which when paraphrased, she noted that she has not witnessed such level of positive transformation in the town as a indigene of the area. Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State also praised Dr, Maduka to high heavens for his developmental strides during the April 2008, commissioning of the police station in the community.

Dr. Goodwin Maduka also needs to be assured of the unflinching support of these families in Umuchukwu. They are the Ibe's family, the Obis'family, the Oledibenma's family and Nwankwo's family. Members of these families strongly believe that the titles of Okpata Ozuo Ora, Ochendo, Ochonma Obodo Ya, Obu Uzo Ogu, Okaa Obulu uzo and Omelu Ora, should be urgently conferred on him in appreciation of his unprecedented magnanimity to the community. They have also unanimously advised his traducers to avoid ad hominem attacks on Dr. Maduka, and embrace peace. They also urged that maximum support be extended to him to enable him to continue to execute God's mandate in this planet-earth.

In conclusion, the accusations against Dr. Maduka were exercises in mischief- making and lacked in substances. Dr. Maduka has been able to establish himself as a pillar of hope in the community, and a homo sequendum, in terms of his commitment to improve the welfare of the indigenes. I, therefore, urge all stakeholders to work for peace, which is a sine-qua-non for more development and progress in the community. I also urge that we pray to God to increase his tribe, and continue to endow him with good health, long life, more financial exploits, as well as a bigger heart to deploy his vast resources, more than before for the betterment of the indigenes of Umuchukwu community and neighboring environs.

I thank you for your time.
