It is South Africa

Top 12 largest and strongest African economies

Africa economic report won’t have its zest if it does not have who is who of African economies. Like year, the top 12 largest African economies are the same with some slide modification at the top of the chart. The Republic of South Africa remains the biggest and strongest African economy with a GDP $ 272.2 billion and the second largest and strongest African economy is Nigeria with a GDP of $ 141.3 billion the third is Algeria with a GDP of $ 137.2 billion and the fourth largest and biggest African economy is Egypt with a GDP of $ 111.8 billion. The changes noted in the classification this year are the great leap forward of Angola and war ravaged Sudan.  Angola, which is recovering from 25 years civil war, has over taken the Kingdom of Morocco as the fifth largest African economy with a GDP of $ 66.1 billion.

Morocco is now the sixth largest African economy with a GDP of $ 61.1 billion; Libya is the seventh largest African economy with a GDP of $ 56.0 billion. Sudan is the eighth largest African economy with a GDP of $ 45.7 billion, Tunisia is ninth with a GDP of $ 33.1 billion, Zimbabwe is tenth with a GDP of $ 26.4 billion, Kenya is eleventh with a GDP of $ 24.8 billion and Cameroon is twelfth with a GDP of $ 20.1 billion. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, the erstwhile largest and strongest French-speaking black African economy is thirteenth with a GDP of $ 18.7 billion.

Any economy that is entirely dependent on commodities is NOT strong, so Botswana is out.

1. South Africa – GDP: $533.2 billion
Africa’s largest economy looms over the rest and has an abundant supply of natural resources with well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors. South Africa has a modern infrastructure that supports an efficient distribution of goods to major urban centers throughout the region and a stock exchange that ranks among the 10 largest in the world.

1.The Rand was the best performing currency against the US dollar between 2002 and 2005 (Bloomberg Currency Scoreboard)
2.South Africa has 55,000 high-net individuals holding at least US $1 million in financial assets (World Wealth Report 2008)
3.South Africa has the 27th biggest economy in the world, with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US $254 billion (World Bank)
4.South Africa accounts for almost 25% of the GDP of the entire African continent, with an economy more than twice the size of the second biggest – Algeria (World Bank)
5.Gauteng is South Africa’s smallest province but produces 34% of South Africa’s

A lot depends on the parameters used. It seems size is the yardstick here. the link you provided had a another parameter, namely per ca pita. For Africa I would be satisfied if the attribute of strong economy is matched by equity of benefit to the citizens. This would remove SA and Nigeria from their perches and instead allow Botswana as a stronger and effective economy.

, size of an economy is not measured on currency and exchange rate but on Gross Domestic Product.

Besides Ghanaian government had to cut some digits in their currency a while ago. The South African Rand is the 10th most traded currency in the world and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in Africa.

4.South Africa accounts for almost 25% of the GDP of the entire African continent, with an economy more than twice the size of the second biggest – Algeria (World Bank)
The other interesting stat is that South Africa consumes just 4% of total land area in Africa.

@OP

You will have to expand on what you mean by "Strongest"?

Size? Reliability? Growth? FDI attractiveness? Populace lifestyle?

I feel insulted that South Africa's economy can be compared to that of Ghana. That country's economy is not even bigger than that of Johannesburg & Pretoria combined. As for whether whites are still or control or what, thats not a problem, the main thing is that South Africa is a an economical powerhouse of Africa, and I as a South African I'm proud of that. My tax is contributing to the economic activities of this country.
