The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed met with president Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa on Sunday night by 11pm, a Source has told LeadersNG.

It was revealed that the main reason why the CJN met with the president was the arrest of two Justices of the Supreme Court by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of corruption.

We were told that a furious Justice Mohammed wanted to know why the president sanctioned the abduction of two justices of the Supreme Court in the middle of the night from their homes. It was also learnt that the CJN confronted the president about the motive of the arrest since he had earlier reported to the president about an attempt to bribe the two arrested Justices by one of his ministers, Rotimi Amaechi sometimes in January, 2016.

According to the source, sometime in January, 2016, the Minister of Aviation, Rotimi Amaechi in the company of a serving Director of the DSS had approached the two arrested Justices of the Supreme Court – Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro at the home of Justice Ngwuta at the Judges’ Quarters in Abuja to help compromise the Election Tribunal Judgement before his Lordships. They brought the sum of $2million dollars to achieve this. After speaking with both Justices for over an hour on the matter, they called the de-factor president and childhood friend of the president, Alhaji Mamman Daura on the phone who pleaded with the Justices to help as Mr. Amaechi was representing the president on the matter.

It was also revealed that after going back and forth on the matter, the Justices refused to collect the money and later reported the matter to the CJN. The source further stated that the Chief Justice of the Federation that same week reported the matter to the president. Although we learned that president Buhari denied ever instructing Mr. Amaechi to approach any of the Justices and assured the CJN of an investigation into the matter, no investigation was ever carried out to the knowledge of the CJN.

The CJN was heard to have told the president in a very frank manner that all Justices of the Supreme Court know why Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro were arrested and that they believe the president wants to undermine the judiciary.

The source also added that president Buhari was on the defensive throughout the meeting claiming he was not properly briefed by the DSS and that he didn’t know the identities of the Justices involved. The president promised the CJN that the Justices will be released by the DSS.

The National Judicial Council is currently meeting now on the matter.

You will recall that on Saturday, the DSS in what it called a “sting operation” in five states across the country, arrested seven judges, including two Justices of the Supreme Court, and five judges of the Federal High Court.
