this practice of self-inflicted harm or self-flagellation is called in Arabic/Islamic terminology TATBEER OR TATBIR. (disclaimer: the above picture of a man gauging his eyes out is false. tatbeer does not include gauging one's eyes. perhaps that man is from another faith).

we Shia Muslims denounce this ritual. it is less than 1% among us that insist on doing this symbolic ritual when we commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (as), the third Shia imam and grandson of Prophet Muhammad (s) on the holy day of Ashura in the holy Islamic month of Muharram.

our highest ranking scholars (ayatollahs) have issued countless fatwas (religious decrees) to ask the ignorant and uneducated ones who are overzealous in practicing this ritual to stop it. it is very hard to find any Nigerian Shia doing this ritual because almost all our scholars reject it. many Shia Muslims around the world have stopped and a few still insist on carrying it out on Ashura. they believe that its a symbolic ritual to demonstrate their willingness to die and sacrifice their bodies for Imam Hussein (as), who was betrayed and abandoned to be beheaded along with his family members in Karbala by the army of the fifth Sunni caliph, Yazeed Ibn Muawiya. however our scholars have insisted that self harm is forbidden in Islam and in the Quran.

as usual, the media does not see the good side of the commemoration where Shia show acts of kindness and worship, donate blood to hospitals, give out food and money, etc. good news is no news. the media focuses on this as a form of religious propaganda against all Shia Muslims, as if the overwhelming majority (99%) do not oppose this ritual. this ritual is alien to the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (as) on Ashura. it was copied from other religions, particularly Hinduism and Christianity/Catholicism around the 19th century CE.

in Christianity, Catholics re-enact the "crucifixion" of Jesus. Catholic men crucify themselves. On Easter, Catholics crucify themselves in Latin American countries (particularly Mexico) and in the Philippines to feel the pains and sufferings of Jesus.

on this same Nairaland, there are currently threads on this same topic on the Islam forum opened by both Shia (to denounce the practice) and by Sunnis (for propaganda). i dont know the need why there is such a thread in the political forum. it is aimed to spread religious propaganda hatred.
