Contrary to its claims, indications emerged on Monday night that the Department of State Service (DSS) might not have got a water-tight case against the judges whose houses were raided before they were bundled away like common criminals over alleged involvement in corrupt practices after all.

It was learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari was furious over confidential reports on the probative value of the evidence so far gathered regarding the cases.

It was further learnt that after a team of lawyers well versed in criminal jurisprudence reviewed the evidence so far gathered including the purported confessional statements made by the affected judges, it was advised that a sister agency better experienced in that genre of investigation be invited to take over the judges’ case files.

However, SaharaReporters reported that President Muhammadu Buhari, was reportedly unhappy with the work of the Department of State Services (DSS) after a team of lawyers reviewed the evidence gathered from the agency’s recent raid on judges suspected of corruption.

He was reported to have ordered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) take over the matter.

The decision is said to have followed weeks of reviewing the evidence assembled by DSS, as well as the statements made by the judges involved.

The president is said to be insisting that the investigations must be more professionally handled.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the review of the case files, the delay in filing charges against the judges, and the shoddiness of the performance of DSS gave some of the judges the opportunity to start recanting their statements and twisting the facts of their cases.

A Presidency source said the President, as well as the office of the Vice President which also reviewed the cases, decided that multi-agency collaboration was needed to strengthen the cases before they go to court.

The DSS was initially mandated to work with the EFCC to do thorough investigations before a raid was carried out, but sources told SaharaReporters that due to intra-agency rivalry, the DSS refused to hand over case information to the EFCC and hid their plans from the anti-corruption agency, preferring to work with the Nigeria police.

Police officers invited on the raid, in turn, leaked the plans to the judges involved.

In the case of Rivers State, for instance, the police tipped off the state Governor, Nyeson Wike, who then mobilized, with the support of the state Commissioner of Police, to personally stop the arrest of a federal judge.

Another reason adduced for the action of the DSS was said to be the desire by the Director-General of the agency, Lawal Daura, to warm himself into the heart of the President.

President Buhari has now ordered him to work with the EFCC and ensure that future investigations are properly done.

Given the size of the anti-corruption challenge, however, it is unclear if, in the absence of outright rebukes or personnel changes, the President’s scheme might not be subverted.

It is the usual blame game after failure. I bet the info also leaked from the DSS and not the police as insinuated.

My fellow brothers and sisters, tell me. Is this how we'll fight corruption and win?

I think I also need to see the WASC Certificate of the Head of DSS grin

Yet on the strength of this level of stupidity, some goats have been asking, even demanding that judges step down. AB Mahmoud (NBA President) should eat purge shït for recanting his earlier position on the illegality of the actions of the DSS and turning around to pressure the Judges to step down. He's just a compromised, fulani turncoat!

Fighting corruption indeed when the fighters are even worse, far dirtier than those they seek to clean up from the top!

This refusal of buhari to shake up some deadwood he foolishly appointed will continue to bite him in the arse otherwise this kind of stupidity should have seen Daura sent back to retirement if not for ethnic bigotry!

Serves him right. Next time he will learn to have an air tight evidence against suspects £efore arresting them unconstitutionally rather than resorting to all these media trials just to distract nigerians' attention 4rm heavily criticising him 4 d recession. I pray fg loose that case to serve as a lesson so dat next time, d rule of law will £e squarely followed

This is the result of playing to the gallery. Arrest before investigation is pure quackery.

But they want Nigerians to hail them.
