The late Gen. Murtala Mohammed is the only military Head of State on the Naira, the N20 note. And he was a coup plotter who played leading roles in two major coups.
The July 28 - 29, 1966 coup that toppled Major General Aguyi Ironsi, the first military Head of State of Nigeria and plunged the young nation into a catastrophic civil war from 1967 to 1970. Then Murtala masterminded the third Nigerian coup d'etat of July 29, 1975, to overthrow Gen. Yakubu Gowon, the second military Head of State of Nigeria. And Murtala became the third military Head of State of Nigeria until he was assassinated in one of the bloodiest coups in the history of Nigeria on Friday, February 13, 1976. He was succeeded by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, the first Yoruba Head of State of Nigeria who later became a democratically elected President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.

Majority of Nigerian youths were either babies 40 years ago or were yet to be born . So, their knowledge of the late Gen. Murtala Mohammed is from publications on the history of Nigeria and word of mouth. They see him on the N20 note and have accepted it without asking why an antidemocratic military coup plotter should be celebrated and eulogised as a national hero.
What did he achieve for Nigeria by his military coups?
And the release of '76, the new film of multiple award winning Nigerian filmmaker, Izu Ojukwu on the assassination of Murtala Mohammed has given millions of Nigerian youths the opportunity to know him better.

Murtala was murdered with his Aide Camp and driver. But his Orderly miraculously regained consciousness in the mortuary hours later. And he is still alive today.

My eyewitness account of that fateful day of Friday, February 13, 1976, will be published tomorrow. I was a class one student at the famous St. Gregory's College in South West Ikoyi close to the State House at the Dodan Barracks in Obalende. And our residence was at No. 28, Obalende Road.

He toppled Gen. Yakubu Gowon, because Gowon's military regime was very corrupt.

I
My logic is if they honoured Gen. Murtala Mohammed, then the first military Head of State of Nigeria, Gen. Aguyi Ironsi should also be honoured.

There is something mysterious about the two coups led by Murtala Mohammed.
Both happened on July 28-29.
This was not coincidental.

No.
That's not all.
They said Gowon postponed the transition to civil rule indefinitely.

Was Buhari not also a coup plotter?

Infact Mohammed's coup was less offensive as he sought to remove another military regime. But Buhari over threw a democratically elected government which is an even more grievous sin.

Murtala Mohammed is a classic case of everything that bad with Nigeria. That an evil man like Murtala Mohammed can be honored with his treacherous face put on the N20 and have Landmarks such as an International Airport named after him is just incredible. Let enumerate some of the many evils Murtala commited.

1) Murtala Mohammed led the counter coup of July 1966 where he and his Northern cohorts killed over 300 Soldiers, mainly from the East.

2) As commander of the second division of the Nigerian Army that was advancing into the mid-west in 1967, Murtala Mohammed ordered the summary execution of all prisoners of war that were caught. Lt Ishola Williams testified to this.

3)When Murtala got to Asaba, his men murdered almost 1000 Asaba indigenes in cold blood

4)Murtala displayed what a hopeless Soldier he was when his 3 attempts to cross the River Niger and capture Onitsha were crushed by galant Biafran Soldiers. Murtala then went up North to cross the River but was destroyed at the battle of Abagana. Murtala was then recalled from the war as a result of his monumental loses.

5) In his second coup in 1975, Murtala commited one of the worst act of Military indicipline when he retired everyone who was above him in rank the triple promoted him self from a one star Brigadier General to a full 4 star General in one go

I dont even want to go into the 11,000 people Murtala fired from their jobs

Murtala was a certified killer, a homicidal maniac, a failed Soldier, accomplished coup plotter and Military dictator. The man was the embodiment of pure evil. It is a national embarrasment that Nigeria continues honour this man

He created the foundation towards the return of democracy which Obj followed through on..., Probed corrupt politicians & civil servants , the first of its kind. Created an anti graft body which Obj perhaps recreated in his second coming..., introduced sanity into the federal civil service. Need I not say much, an attempt to compare him with one Ironsi of a bigot is a big slap on his legendary.

Point number 4 is not complete, you forgot to add that despite all he eventually captured Onitsha & hoisted the Nigerian flag on its soil.

You also did not complete your conclusion In that HE was a gallant soldier who fought for his country's unity.

He may have fought for his country, but that means nothing compared to the fact that he is a war criminal
