I don't think you even know how it looks like.. well it's computer generated and replaceable if lost.. if you don't have custom paper for your car, I would advice you limit your movement to within your city. No intercity linked with federal highway or inter state movement..

Make a trip to any Magistrate or High Court around you. Get an Affidavit. It's the ONLY legal document recognized by Nigeria law.

One, they say ignorance is no excuse. Before you buy any vehicle, make sure you do your findings with customs. This is very easy with any clearing agent or go to Customs office with your c - number yourself.

If the vehicle has no duty and you must buy the vehicle, make sure you pay the duty once buy or before you start driving around, the penalty is severe if you are unlucky to be check.

Not paying duty at point of entry (Sea or Land border) is no big deal. That is one of the purpose of customs offices off sea and land border. There are customs offices in some states like Ibadan, Ilorin, Edo, Enugu, Kaduna and so on, all you need is your Bill of Lading and an invoice will be raised in your favour. Avoid stories that touch.

If customs is as dutiful as it ought, they should try to clampdown on such entries at the borders....


But, it's easier said than done anyways.

In the alternative, u can seek the help of a trusted person that ships cars through seme or igolo to help take the car to the custom post there for it to be valued and then pay up to get the custom papers.

If you already bought the car

B. If the result comes back negative, then walk into customs office near you and enquire.

C. You don't need to know someone just walk up to a custom staff, explain yourself and ask for his advice.

If you have not purchased the car

A. Meet a friend or neighbour who has a car, you can meet several and compare their custom papers study it and notice a pattern, that will help you a lot. Also cars bought brand new in Nigeria don't have custom papers but have a certain clearance given by the dealer.

B. Now when you meet a dealer be cool and calm, first thing I always ask before even checking a car are the documents, why bother checking a car and at the end it doesn't have a custom document/relevant papers. owner telling you he lost it, please better leave that car alone.

C. If the custom document are provided and available, tell the dealer you will confirm the custom document all you need is the C number and Vin he should be willing to provide it.
please if there is an error there, in your findings walk away. I had an issue when I bought a Nissan almera and a particular docs was saying Nissan sunny because both cars look alike and the mistake was made in the vehicle registration I just thank God Okoro wasn't smart enough to notice it.

D. If you are certain your custom document are intact, when doing interstate and you know you will encounter custom. Do a photocopy and keep original inside car also. If you produce photocopy and they demand original open your vault, dust the original and show them.

E. It's always advice able to bind your car documents, it gives them a sense of informed person, they won't try their luck with you, also try and have a lawyers wig, chief staff/title holder attire in the car.

This idea works for cars that been registered after 4 years of import. It does not work for newly registered tokunbo cars,

My dear just go and pay ur duty. That's d only sure way. The day this guy's catch me that was on March this year nd I was able to bail d car out by July. They generated 536k for me to pay as a duty which I did before they released my car despite d fact dat my uncle wz a controller. I will advise u go to customs office (at Lagos or ph coz that d only two places u can pay duty) with ur vehicle purchase documents. U will need an agency dat will clear the goods. Just know dat any office u enter u must drop something. But wit my uncle's influence I didn't drop any thing nd I wz given urgent attention. Wen u get there they will explain to u better but just tell them u just bought from car nd u want to pay duty...they will tell u d procedures. But if ur car is up to 2years on d road u need not bother about customs duty. Thanks

Can the custom papers be gotten?

Is there a legislation that protects innocent car owners who do not know they were given fake custom papers.

Is there a fine to redeem impounded vehicles

or will a car be forfeited once it is impounded by customs officials for not having custom papers.

Be advised. Affidavit is not an alrternative to SGD(single goods declaration form) or form C 2016. And you can only use the vehicle VIN to confirm the genuinety of the vehicle that was imported via RORO (roll on roll off) from abroad. Not all ports. Nigeria customs will never accept affidavit. It's either you present the original declaration or your vehicle or your car is detained, seized or auctioned to the public to serve as deterrent to others. If detained, you might be offered the grace to pay the duty, taxes and levies with commensurate penalty. Be guided, gone are the days that you believe once a car has been engraved, that it's off customs. No not atall. NCS seizes old vehicles which duties has not been paid for .. so far your vehicle is still less than 7 years old. Another new circular says anybody caught with forged customs paper should be arrested and the suspect will thereafter lead the NCS to the person/dealer that gave him/her the fake papers. On a last note: confirm the documents of that lovely automobile before making payment so as to avoid stories that touches. Thanks

Go any customs station which is at border area or sea port if your car year of production does not pass 10 years. Go to CPC customs processing center they ll give you asssessment then you ll proceed to bank and pay ypur customs duty, but if field customs detained your car on the road you ll pay additional fine after payment of customs duty. Be not dismayed. Ofcourse, there are always some custom officers who will want to take advantage of neophytes like yourself with shakara once you present them with your sworn affidavit.

Don't even try to plead or quarrel with them unless you're willing to grease their palm.

Leave your car with them, get a professional lawyer and sue them to court. Yaasin - if the Comptroller General of Customs (Hameed Ali) does not contact you directly, be rest assured that a DCG definitely will.

Just make sure the lawsuit settlement starts from 1Billion Naira and above - Goodnyte!

You can only do a sworn affidavit in case you lost the originals.

When you do not have duty on your car, no thousand and one court affidavit can save you when they grab you on the highway.

There is the VIN on your car they will use to check if your car has duty paid on it or not, instantly at the check point.

That is the reason why you should take just 30 minutes and just 2000 naira to verify the papers at any custom office nearest to your point of purchase or better still buy from trusted and tested dealers like me.

I take time to verify well before even putting any car for sale. Cos in the end when the unsuspecting client enters Customs wahala, it sure will bounce back to the person who sold the car.

Passing through many states doesn't mean you will automatically run into officers on the highway. Maybe the driver knows what route to avoid or what time to travel just to avoid the Customs officers.

If your car is without customs paper you have to avoid driving inter-state for now to avoid the car being impounded and your going through unnecessary bottlenecks to get it sorted out. If you're interested in making your car legally updated, take the receipt of purchase with other necessary documents to a recognized customs licensed agent who will help you get a valuation using the Chassis number and year of production from the customs vehicle seat either at Apapa or TinCan commands. Then you pay the calculated duty rate as gotten from the customs valuation to any designated bank, get the payment verified, then released and stamped with the customs authority. You're good to go.
