President Muhammadu Buhari is an usually lucky man. He hardly gets grilled for poor performance. Even the smattering of questioning voices get drowned in the defensive cacophony of belligerent roars of many, trying still, to defend their sad decision to foist the man on the nation.

Also, whereas Nigerians may grumble about tough economic times, they seem to have lost the traditional chutzpah to ask pertinent questions of Mr. President and his team's performance.

The year 2016 is to all intents and purposes done. I guess the biological clock of the 2016 budget is also wound down. Perhaps not, as it was delivered in May 2016. Even then let's not forget the sure fire indicator that Budget 2016 is dying if not dead already. That Mr. President is all trussed up to deliver the 2017 budget to the National Assembly.

So while President Buhari ambles to the National Assembly with his 2017 budget, there is a curious reality: No one seems to be asking Mr. President what he did with the 2016 budget of N6 .07 trillion, the biggest ever budget and perhaps the least performing in Nigeria's history.

How has the revenue side of the budget performed to date? And the capital expenditure? Any new roads, hospitals, water works anywhere in Nigeria? Has electric power improved? More jobs? More foods? More industries? What exactly did Mr. President put on the table to improve the lives of citizens?

Maybe the entire budget was used to spoon feed our overfed presidency, governors, local government chairmen, ministers and government workers, legislators and judges. Indeed one cannot forget the huge costs of military internal interventions to secure the Niger Delta region (Operation Crocodile Tears?), South East region (Operation Python Dance) and North East/Sambisa Forest region (Operation Perennial Vulture Tears).

While the big boys of government and military contractors are feeding fat, the great majority of Nigerians are holding the short end of a mean stick. What exactly has Budget 2016 contributed to our lives? Any roads? Any bridges? Any water works? Any hospitals? Improved agriculture? Better electric power? Job loss stemmed? What is the total revenue that flowed into the federal coffers? How's the money expended? We need to know.

Maybe at 12 midnight, December 31, 2016, President Buhari will assemble his sorry team of lackluster ministers to give us the scorecard of each ministry and the presidency. Perhaps, the reason no one is asking is because we all know a little kept secret: That 2016 is a wasted federal year and that the N6 trillion 2016 budget is not worth the paper on which it was written and padded.
