General Yakubu "Jack" Dan-Yumma Gowon (born 19 October 1934) is the 3rd former head of state (Head of the Federal Military Government) of Nigeriafrom 1966 to 1975. He took power after one military coup d'état and was overthrown in another. During his rule, the Nigerian government successfully prevented Biafran secession during the 1967–70 Nigerian Civiil war.
AChievement
Gowon’s vision of rebuilding the country through the three R’s – Rehabilitation, Reconciliation and Reconstruction recorded a level of success. He launched the first National Development Plan for the nation.”
The immediate post-war era witnessed the “oil boom” and with the nation’s new oil wealth, Gowon embarked on several capital projects, especially in the then Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos. Another decision made by Gowon at the height of the oil boom was his indigenization policy of 1972, which declared many sectors of the Nigerian economy off-limits to all foreign
Also, the administration of Gowon created the first 12 states in the country, to give each section of Nigeria a sense of belonging. The administration also created the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This scheme was created to foster national unity, integration, mutual understanding and co-existence among Nigerian youths as a way of averting acrimony along ethnic leanings, a factor that led to the civil war.
General Yakubu Gowon is the best military leader that ruled Nigeria because of his rare quality of humility, a typical soldier on whose shoulder providence bestowed the enormous responsibility of leading our nation through its most turbulent years in history. As a young military officer, at the age of 36, Gowon was able to provide the needed leadership for Nigeria throughout the period of the civil war and the country emerged stronger from the ashes of the war. Through the slogan “No Victor, No Vanquished”, Nigeria came out of the civil war as a more cohesive and united entity.
Gowon's achievement even as a young man hasn't been achieved. Youth, young minds rise up. Let move our nation forward

Yakubu Gowon belonged to that exclusive group of young Nothern officers in the 60's who destroyed Nigeria.

Gowon simply represents the Northern domination of Nigeria and anyone who thinks good of Gowon need to their head re-examined.

Gowon caused the civil war by breaking the Aburi agreement he signed in Ghana with Ojukwu

It was Gowon who abolished regionalism, created states, took away resource control and true federalism just so that him and his fellow Northerners could perpetrate 'divide and rule' and use it to gain political and economical control of Nigeria.

Gowon caused millions of deaths by using starvation as an instrument of war, an act that is today regarded as a war crime by the ICC. Little wonder that Gowon is still listed amongst the top 3 genocidal killers in Africa along with Mengitsu Haile of Ethiopia and Idi Amin of Uganda.

After the war, Gowon ran what is regarded as the most wateful Government in history amid unprecedented Oil boom.

Gowon never had any intention of allowing democracy to return to Nigeria. While military officers like Abubakar returned Nigeria to democracy within 2 years of coming to office. Gowon wasted 9 years with no plan to return Nigeria to democracy.

Gowon never represented anything good. He was just another Nothern officer who wanted 'one Nigeria' because of Oil money. Gowon was an evil man

Any man who would father a child and deny him for more than 30 years, and then suddenly recognize him when he is dying is not a hero. Musa his son would never forgive him.

THIS IS THE MAN THAT DESTROYED NIGERIA AND WELL I BELIEVE THATS WHY HE HARDLY SAY ANYTHING CONCERNING THE COUNTRY.

THE COUP AND COUNTER COUP CAN BE WIPED AWAY BUT THE ACCORD AGREEMENT WHICH HE FAIL TO HONOR AND THE CIVIL WAR THAT ENSUED IS THE UNDOING OF WHATEVER PEACE THAT WILL EVER HAPPEN TO THIS COUNTRY.

LOOK AT HOW WE ARE BEGGING FOR RESOURCE CONTROL AFTER FIFTY YEARS BECAUSE ONE MAN DISALLOWED THE AGREEMENT WHEN IT WAS FIRST TENDERED.

All the blame you listed belong to the Igbo man Aguiyi Ironsi who orchestrated the first coup in Nigeria.

Truncated confederalism / regionalism for a unitary system. Gowon only took advantage of the greed n foolishness of another Igbo man.
