Nigerian minister announced the move Wednesday after meeting with Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi Abuja: Taiwan accused China of interference after the Nigerian government ordered the island to move its trade mission from the capital Abuja to Lagos. Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama announced the move on Wednesday after meeting with Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said. Onyeama said Taiwan would stop enjoying privileges because it wasn’t a country recognised under international law, Xinhua said. During the talks, Onyeama also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the “One-China” policy. Taiwan’s foreign ministry protested the decision in a statement on Thursday. “The foreign ministry strongly protests and condemns the unreasonable, rude and outrageous act of political hype carried out by the Nigerian government in complying with mainland China’s political goals,” the ministry said. China has shown a willingness to use its growing economic and military might to put pressure on Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, which swept the more Beijing-friendly Kuomintang from power last year. The move comes less than a month after the tiny West African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe broke off ties with Taiwan and established formal relations with China, leaving the self-ruled island with just 21 diplomatic partners. The Communist Party considers the self-governed island a province and has criticised President Tsai Ing-wen’s refusal to accept that both sides belong to “One China,” its precondition for ties. China had refrained from actively wooing away any of Taiwan’s diplomatic partners during the eight-year tenure of Tsai’s predecessor, Ma Ying-jeou, who advocated increased ties with the world’s second-largest economy. Tsai is wrapping up a weeklong Central American tour, in which she has been shoring up relations with her dwindling roster of diplomatic friends. The Nigerian move suggests she also might need to be concerned about Taiwan’s business interests in countries that lack formal ties to Taipei. Nigeria has been seeking Chinese support after a slump in oil prices pushed the African nation to the brink of its first full-year recession since 1991. The two countries have been discussing various deals spanning oil production to infrastructure, with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari returning from a visit to Beijing in April with promises for $6 billion (Dh2 billion) of loans. Wang told Buhari on Wednesday that China “appreciates that the Nigerian side made good on its pledge to implement the One-China principle, and carried out concrete and decisive measures to clear political obstacles to the development of bilateral relations.” Source: https://larryshotspot..com.ng/2017/01/taiwan-protests-nigeria-order-to-move.html |

Nigeria severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1971! The Nigerian government then established diplomatic relations with the Peoples Republic of China in February 1971 and General Gowon visited Beijing in 1974. Nigeria has not reestablished diplomatic relations with Taiwan since then. Taiwan established a trade and cultural office in Lagos in 1991. It was moved to Abuja in 2001. That office has been passing itself off as an embassy since c2013, despite the fact that there is no diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Taiwan. The Chinese government protested the activities of the Taiwan Trade Office to the Nigerian Government in 2016, but the Nigerian Government replied that the trade office is not an embassy. The Nigerian Government has now ordered the Taiwanese to move their trade office to Lagos to make the distinction clear. (Most countries of the world operate a similar system. Eg, the US does not have an embassy in Taiwan, neither does Taiwan have an embassy in the US. The US broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1980. The US has a trade office in Taiwan and Taiwan has a trade office in the US. The UK broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1950 and recognised China in the same year. The United Nations stopped recognising the ROC in 1971 and instead recognises the Peoples Republic of China). 39 Likes 1 Share |

Very good move! Nigeria and China are strategic partners. We have no business or benefit from Taiwan. China has just pledged a $40bn trade deal with Nigeria. More importantly, we will not support the secession of any country! 7 Likes |

blackpanda:Nigeria has no business or benefit from Taiwan? Very funny. Go back and check the value of the volume of trade between Nigeria and Taiwan, and asides that, the strategic cultural partnership since the 1970s. This move may be coming on the heels of the Sino-Nigerian trade deal that happened last year, With the Taiwan-clause. I think this is coming now because this administration was reluctant in sacrificing relations with Taiwan, and now they're desperate, they've called the Chinese for help, and the latter are ringing their terms loud and clear. 9 Likes |

Buhari and his bunch of noise makers keeps bungling everything! Just look at how China is dictating to us on what to do & the dullard will execute it with alacrity so his master could lend him some loans. If he had done the right thing at inception, would he be going around begging like a poor & shameless almajiri. SMH 2 Likes |

bishopkay: Only a dumb person will even associate the Taiwan independence with Palestine. A secessionist state is different from an occupied country but a religious bigot will never see that. I'm sure you are Ibo. Israel are just like the Ibos. Welcome them to your state and very soon, they claim it's a 'no man's land'. Anyway, bilateral relations with China is more beneficial than with Taiwan, so I agree with the dullard here. 2 Likes |
