Dump both of them and opt for Elect/Elect engineering instead! Kill two birds with a stone with the possibility of killing more birds with same stone.

Computer science in Nigeria university for me is a waste of time cus their lecturers are not capable, if you pick computer engineering be ready to sign up with any ICT firm as an intern to help with practicals...

Exactly my point.

thanks but what's the difference between, computers and electronic devices

Whats d difference between a desktop computer and a standing fan?
Electronic devices are devices powered by electric energy. Simple. A computer is a type of electronic device that can accept input and output. An electric fan cannot accept digital input or output

Computer engineering a waste of 5 years in Nigerian schools. Zero practicals. Even the Ibo boys at computer village know how to operate computers more than our so called computer engineers.

Computer Science is the study of computation. It informs how we create software (ideally). Topics might be: Complexity, algorithms, models of computation, automata, … It is arguably a branch of discrete mathematics, and builds upon set theory, logic, etc.
Computer Engineering is studying how computing machines are built. It informs how we build hardware. Topics might be: Hardware architectures, gates, instruction set design, digital communications … It overlaps digital electronics and physics.
So you see the word "computer" in "Computer science" is something of a misnomer. Perhaps "Computing science" might be more accurate.
The famous analogy used by Edsger Dijkstra (computer scientist) was: "Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."

At least acknowledge your internet source if you are gonna copy and paste.

1. This is Unizik, Nigeria, even for Computer Science we haven't been able to successful teach and develop competence talk-less Computer Engineering.

2. They aren't the same thing by the way (except in Nigeria). And don't confuse computer engineering with computer hardware. So those talking about technical matters aren't helping you. Computer Science includes 'technicals', involves hardware, networks, software, databases etc

Check a foreign university online; compare Computer Engineering with Computer Science. You'll see courses each department take.

Long and short, go to Unizik, buy a DESKTOP COMPUTER or two, get your OWN BOOKS, get your hands dirty, learn the little or much they lecture you at Unizik and develop yourself.

But first things first - face that JAMB and get that admission. Best Wishes!

I’m literally a Jambite who wants to study Computer Engineering in the university because someone ones told me that computer engineering course covers both the technical and software aspect of a computer whilst Computer Science deals on only the software part of a computer. I chose engineering because I wanted to use my full potentials and to cover more in the era of technology (I’m pretty good at maths).

But currently I’m hearing different stories bout computer engineering in the Nigeria University that it doesn’t worth it and it’s a waste of time and students are been denied practicals which is not supposed to be so (based on its technicality).
So please our graduates in the house esp those who studied the above mentioned courses or similar stuffs should please assist a young fellow.
Please Moderator forward this to FP as it might as well help those of same or similar problem.

No one reads cpe and regrets it. Computer Science is like physics, mathematics etc. I think I'm right with this. Though they might be saying they own software part, who cares. Cpe deals with both hardware and software parts. In fact some take software engineering as a course, though maybe not in Nigeria but don't let them deceive you cpe owns both, and you av a choice of specializing on the one
U lik best during ur final year.

“Computer Engineering” typically focuses specifically on computer hardware and software. It is an integration of computer science and electrical engineering.

I will advise you go for computer engineering. Despite all you have heard about Nigeria universities, computer science is no better. The school I finished for example was offering computer with mathematics. The students realized their was no difference between their colleagues studying pure maths. I had a friend who regretted studying that course as against engineering.

Outside the country, computer science is okay. But while in Nigeria, will advise you go for computer engineering.

OP,, I agreed with this buddy

I think the answer to your question would be basically where you see yourself and what you really enjoy doing.

If you like writing programs, designing practical solutions to problems, database, system analysis etc, then your best bet is Computer science. You are not taught the hardware but the software part of a computer.

If you like fixing computers, the hardware part of a computer, then go for Computer engineering. Although i would advise that Electrical Electronics Engineering would be more encompassing than Computer Engineering.

How about having a one - one talk with people who studied either Computer science or Computer Engineering. I once faced this dilemma. All the best !!!
Re: Difference Between Computer Science And Computer Engineering Course? by pLord: 1:21pm On Apr 03, 2017
Depends on what you want, if you consider proficiency in both software and hardware, I will advise u don't do the computer engineering because most Nigerian universities have no bearing in this. I did electrical and computer engineering and I can tell u I didn't regret the decision. Right now I am a software engineer(my first love) very versed in hardware(design and integration) and telecommunication.

Fans have control circuits and don't necessarily rely on conventional switches

Your remote controls still rely on digital electronic principles for effective actions

Some use PICs which as you know requires programming for it to work

Very good question @OP. However, you have to do your home work thoroughly. Considering the fact that you want to study in Nigeria, the Engineering option is preferred for the obvious reason that it is a professional course and allows you to become a registered engineer which might be useful in the future. Aside that it offers no further significant benefit. For Computer Science however, it is the 'in thing' now. I have an engineering background for my first two degrees but I'm currently doing a doctorate in CS and I can tell you the opportunities are immense. This is due to the increasingly role of big data and machine intelligence/artificial intelligence/data mining etc. in our decision making process. These research areas are offering a very promising future and Nigeria is really a fertile ground for such disciplines. You may thus consider an engineering option but with dedicated and disciplined focus on learning some programming languages like Python, Matlab, R, C/C++ etc. and further building immense capacity in mathematics/statistics especially problem formulation/modelling and toy with some basic AI program and apply them in basic optimisation problems. What I have been saying is this - do well to graduate with good grades in Comp. Engr but build immense capacity in your programming skills but with practical application to everyday issues. Do not forget to update yourself with the trends in CS (data management and AI) by being a registered student member of IEEE to have access to some open access journals. Also trail papers for free from academia.edu to researchgate on AI/machine learning. You need to do a serious research on what you want and make up your mind. Ultimately, never forget to always consult your creator - God to ask for direction. He made you and thus knows what's best for you. You can never be wrong taking His advice. All the best!

I realise that anyone with some substantive knowledge can claim to be a data scientist but you get me wrong. You do realise that the key is not just being a scientist but making good and valuable use of such data in decision making. There is a reason data analysts are paid handsomely. The key lies in their ability to take data and be creative with it. Their ability to fairly quantify the contribution of varying factors to a model and achieve some accuracy makes them tick. Furthermore, the ability to be good at establishing a nexus between human behaviour and data models is key. My MS is in EEE with bias in energy management systems optimization and No, I am just seeing the diagram for the first time.
jaybee3:

You do realise you don't have to be a specialist in any of those fields to be a data scientist right?

What's your MSc in?

Have you come across this Venn diagram?

It depends on the school you choosing. The school graduated from offers it as Computer science and Engineering (CSE) department. It's when you get to 300level that you have to choose your option... Good luck.

Choose the one your mind is in it, that is computer Engineering. In the labour market in Nigeria, the two goes hand in hand. Most companies advertise for vacancies on computer related stuff without differentiating between computer Engineering or science. You edge over every other computer related course graduates in Nigerian labour market is your activity outside your regular curricula in school like professional qualifications and any practical experience you can lay your hands on , don't joke with these, if you are going to study computer related course.
Secondary Unizik offers computer Engineering with Electrical/Electronics Engineering together. You have the choice of studying all together till your 4th year before you branch into either Power Engineering option or Electronics and computer Engineering option. I think that is an added advantage. I graduated from the department that is how I know.

I am a graduate of Computer Engineering, and i have been in the IT industry for 3 years now. I also have colleague with computer Science background. From what i have learned in school and the Telecoms industry, also with knowledge shared with Computer Science folks.

I can say that ''Computer Science deals with the study of using computer technology to provide solution to business needs/problem solving, while Computer Engineering teaches about computer system design and integration (hardware and software to drive the system) to solve general life problem''. For example, a web or app developer for business solution. at this level of, you are only dealing with a high level computer programming. On the other hand, micro programming, AI and robotics is an area of the computer technology thought as Engineering.

I may have made a little sense..
I do not agree with you. There are branches of Computer Science that deals with AI and Robotics.
You oversimplified your definition.

Food for thought right?

Computer science is strictly software whereas computer engineering is best of both worlds (software and hardware)

Isnt it a waste of time studying computer engineering in Nigeria? Certificates wont teach u everything u need to know abt computer science but just a branch of a course in computer science.

Depending your choice of institution but I am currently a student of computer engineering in oau and with 3years spent already in that department, I must confess that it is not worth it. Our mates doing computer with econs and with maths delve more into computer courses than we in engineering. Engineering as just been full of irrelevant courses in other engineering departments...
