8pm naija time

Sevilla vs Barca. . . . . . @ The Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuan

Sevilla looking to make it 3 wins on the bounce for the first time in a long, long time in what has been an absolutely topsy-turvy season . . . . . & what a massive scalp it would be.

Fabiano is out but Kanoute & Negredo have been very good in the last 3 outings; Zokora in the middle has helped a lot lately and Jesus Navas is picking up form well enough.
As long as we don't play the damning 4-5-1; we stand a chance on the offensive to put a bit of pressure on Barca's defence too. We have to score goals; that is key!

Jimenez's sack was very welcome - Antonio Alvarez has breathe new air into the side and there seems to be an improvement in the sides play even though some of the losses to Valladolid & Getafe are somewhat unpleasant; but the side has been scoring goals.
Tactically, Álvarez prefers a stock 4-4-2 formation for seven of the eight games he has been incharge so far this season. This has generally meant deploying two outright strikers, usually Fabiano, Negredo or Kanoute, who are supported on the flanks by speedy wingers Navas and Barcelona reject Capel.

A loss nonetheless but one Sevilla Fc can take heart from. . . . the champions were really rattled & its not often we get see that!
Good battling performance; & Barca, for once, can count 'emselves very lucky indeed. Guardiola's countenance at 2 nil said it all. . . . . "this sevilla side could still make a match of it" & how we did.

Even though it pains me that we lost; but i take consolation in the fact that we kept catalan hearts in mouths for the better part of 25mins. . . . grin

For once, a manager does the positive thing at the right time - that double attacking sub of Negredo & Kanoute did the trick; Barca had to be wary and they didn't press as high up the field as they usually do. . . .

Sevilla coach Antonio Alvarez says he will not lose any sleep if Marseille's interest in Luis Fabiano leads to the Brazil striker leaving Spain.

Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier said this week luring Fabiano to Ligue 1 was a priority and Spanish media have reported the French club would pay 15 million euros (£12.4 million) and offer the 29-year-old a three-year contract.

"I am concerned but I am not going to lose any sleep over it," Alvarez said ahead of the Spanish Super Cup first leg against Barcelona.

"We are talking about an exceptional player but if the deal is profitable for the club, there's nothing you can do."

"I will say what I have always said, if Luis Fabiano leaves then someone else will come," he added.

"We'll have to bring in a player who can guarantee success, who knows Spanish football and who is a proven goalscorer."

Losing the versatility of Adriano is a big blow but is necessary in line with keeping the club on safe ground financially. . . . but for Sevilla FC to really take off the shackles and compete with the top-3; we just have to break the banks, even if for only 1-time.

Right now, we need two decent attacking midfielders just to give us options in attack - its all too clear, if Perotti & Navas do not produce, then it is hard to win games.

Sporting Braga 1-0 Sevilla

Not an awfully bad result. . . . but given that we had much control of the game shoulda been far better. Its 1 we can overturn, no shakes - focus now, is further de-mystifying Barca by beating them convincingly in their own home + full squad grin grin grin

I feel it in my bones - this is gonna be a good season in Andalusia!

Terrible performance. . . . . so not how to play against a team like Barca.

Once again, the problem is psychological. . . . To break that all too familiar 2-way horse race, we just have to step and take these so called big-guns toe-to-toe. These are games that can serve as morale boosters for a long season and we mess up like this. All that was needed was a bit of spirit, spunk, bite fight - even if we still lost but battle all the way.

So, so, so very annoying.

Sevilla defender Julien Escude has extended his contract by two seasons, keeping him at the Liga club until 2013.

The France international, 31, joined Sevilla in 2006 after a spell at Ajax.

The former Rennes centre-half, who can also play left-back, was involved in Sevilla’s back-to-back UEFA Cup wins in 2006 and 2007 and their 2007 and 2010 Copa del Rey triumphs.

Arsenal look set to strengthen their defence with the signing of France international Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla, after the Spanish club confirmed an offer had been received for the centre-half.

The Gunners are short of experienced cover at the back, having seen out-of-contract veterans William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre all leave in the summer.

Squillaci, 30, asked to be left out of Sevilla's Champions League play-off against Braga on Wednesday night to avoid being cup-tied.

The former Lyon defender is rated at around £6.5 million, but it remains uncertain whether Arsenal have matched that valuation.

A statement on the Sevilla website read: "Sebastien Squillaci's future is in the air.

"As was confirmed by sporting director Ramon Rodriguez at the airport in Porto, the club have received an offer from Arsenal. "The player asked coaches not to play him in the match."
