This is what make a city thick, no good thing comes on a free plate. Abroad is fine, those are the things that put them where they are today. I living in Europe for almost 2 decades now and I have not stop paying those bills till today. I bought my house 2002, I pay for refuse, pay for for circulating the road, I pay the council for my house being in that local government, I pay for the garden the children play near my house and so many things. Good environment calls for proper funding.what we should be talking about is that they use the money judiciously.
Mr Europe.... all the those little things you have to pay for separately indicate you are living in a village/small community/... not in a major city. Lagos is a major city... there is no need to be collecting separate taxes for waste disposal. ... what next?...taxes for street lights?..taxes for pedestrian walkways?...taxes for building sidewalks?
@ topic... in situations like this... follow the money... who is the contract going to? There will be a connection between contractor and the one pushing the taxes.

Is this Nairaland? Both "Afonja"," Ipob",and "Aboki" are all complaining on a thread that concerns Lagos! No tribalism. Now you understand that it is the Rich against the poor, the elite against the masses, no more APC vs PDP.

Nigerians have an aversion for reading. Chai. Lawma fees won't be paid anymore. Instead each house pays once a year to LASG. That is the levy. It is pretty simple but peeps like to sensationalise things.

Like you said and i ask...what the phuck are they using the money for? To bury them in graves and stack them up in cabinets in exotic flats my generations can afford, guy forget abroad, they know what they are doing, a government that doesn't take embezzlement seriously shouldn't expect me to take tax seriously.

point of correction, nothing like multiple taxes or separate taxes on waste....the Lawma bill wud be stopped and replaced by d PUL.
The PUL wud also be used to provide water and in future, Energy in Lagos! Please take some time to read more on the PAMAU, and PUL.
The Lawma isnt efficient and d activities of the PSP do not meet up wit international best practices. All these need tp be ovehaul, wch gave birth to PUL!

Ambode would soon lose goodwill if he continues to follow this ignoble 'elitist' and heavy-handed path pioneered by his disgusting predecessor called Fashola. This is not creative governance or innovative IGR generation. It's one thing to take advantage of the massive population of a mega city like Lagos, in a manner that individuals would barely feel the pinch. This needs creative thinking, not the usual lazy approach of plucking the low hanging fruit (I regret being Nigerian because of this idiotic and lazy penchant for the easy option). It's another thing to embark on a senseless, ill-advised and unsustainable over-taxing drive.

There are numerous wastage spots in Lagos - residential, recreational, and otherwise, patronised by money drunk idiots who made easy money and are eager to send it foolishly. How about thinking up and implementing some kind of vanity tax? This would yield hundreds of billions annually. Channel your revenue generation efforts towards these areas. Over-tax the so-called 'exclusive' residential enclaves (Osborne Road and its ilk), boat clubs, so-called country clubs (including Ikoyi Club, Island Club, Yoruba Tennis Club, etc), Over-tax the vanity waste centres like Quilox, 57, Cova, et al et al. They are too numerous to mention. Leave ordinary people alone. If you must raise revenue from millions of heads (to leverage on the population), then the cost per individual must be so negligible as to be barely noticeable.

These bastards in political positions must THINK and ideate CREATIVE SOLUTIONS. That's why they were elected or appointed, with massive benefits like plum salaries, allowances, room for corrupt mega deals and siren blaring privileges. If you're not smarter than myself and cannot THINK out innovative solutions other than the regular low hanging fruit that any Ibarapa Poly dropout buffoon can think of, then I personally feel aggrieved that you're there blasting past me in black Toyota Prado and Mercedes G-Wagon SUVs and Hilux pickup vans filled with overzealous police escorts, while I'm standing under the scorching sun waiting for a bus, watching you enjoy the benefits of your incompetence.... You are a waste of space, and should get out of there and make room for those who are capable.

This seems like high philosophy which is inaccessible to the common man. But it is clearly common sense. Not that I think Nigerian politicians are gifted with such common gifts though.

Of course he won't tax his fellow rich elites. So don't expect that.

This is the kind of stuff that calls for an "occupy" movement. A movement to counter any nonsense policy. To oppose the politicians at all turns.
This is something tangible which can be achieved in the short term, not the vague demonstrations without any cogent demands that are to be met.

I wish Charly Boy was in Lagos and would take this up. This policy would die a strangulated death from the masses.

The State will commence collection of an Annual Public Utility Levy...........Speaking on the new Utility Levy, he said bla bla bla. I guess this simply means the old system would be replaced..... no extra payments by property owners.

I'm happy that we at least still have people who still make use of their brains unlike some idiots quoting me in the thread created earlier today on this topic.

Why won't ambode come up with this rubbish when he knows some dead brain dingos will support it. They will collect all the levies and use the money to buy houses in eko Atlantic and still some animals will buy aso ebi and dance around like headless chicken when they commission pedestrian bridge. To them that's a huge sign of development and Lagos has turned to mega city. Mad people

PapaBrowne:
The problem with Nigeria is that too many people feel they should have an opinion and yet they don't even want to read to enlighten themselves.

For those who listened before commenting, you would see that with the PUL all other waste management bills paid to LAWMA would no longer be necessary.

The logic is simple. Previously, when you pay LAWMA fees, it goes directly into a general pool of IGR of Lagos state.

But with the PUL, the fund would to used to cater exclusively for Environmental management issues

Ambode is doing a great job and presenting Lagos with intelligent leadership.

It's just like the borehole requirements that were laid out. Lagos needs to protect the water table, you can't have everyone drilling boreholes as and when they please without expecting environmental destruction but no one wants to think of that instead they want to cry about the process being formalized.

They want development without change.

You pay for these things and you see/get results.
Here in Nigeria, we pay for what we don't use. We pay water bill, and provide our own water. We pay electric bill, but generate our own power.

Nigeria leaders always addopting schemes to rob their people blind. They can not provide the basics yet they heap more and more levies and taxes on their people. So na minimum wage dem want people to pay all those taxes from? It is well maybe I am not understanding it from the point of an Economist . Let me wait until one arrives.
