Aityluv: The only way you confirm the genuineness is by giving it a chance. While a leopard can never change its spots, people grow out of some behaviours and become more mature. What were the negatives you were not happy with? Look out for those. Confirm what you yourself wants and determine whether the guy wants the same, eg marriage.
