Latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that Lagos State topped the list of states in Nigeria with the highest Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2016.

The document, obtained by Business Post on Friday, May 12, 2017, saw the aquatic state made a total of N302.42 billion in Full Year 2016.

It was closely followed by Rivers State, which generated N85.29 billion from IGR, while Ebonyi State generated the lowest the IGR with N2.34 billion.

The stats office said a total of N801.95 billion was generated by 35 states that have reported their Full Year 2016 IGR figure and the revenue was generated across PAYE, Direct Assessment, Road Taxes, Revenue from Ministries, Departments & Agencies and other taxes.

Anambra is the only state that is yet to report its Full Year 2016 IGR figure, the NBS said in its report titled ‘Internally Generated Revenue At State Level (2016).’

Data analysed by Business Post revealed that the IGR for Lagos State increased from N219.20 billion in 2012 to N268.22 billion in 2015 and stood at N302.43 billion in 2016. Much of its revenues were generated from PAYE, which raked N190.66 billion in Full Year 2016, the highest among other sources.

For Ogun State, its IGR rose from N12.44 billion in 2012 to N34.59 billion in 2015 and it improved to N72.98 billion last year. The major source of its revenue came from the MDAs.

Also, the IGR for Rivers State increased from N66.28 billion in 2012 to N82.10 billion in 2015 and moved to N85.29 billion in 2016.

For Kano State, its IGR rose from N11.05 billion in 2012 to N12.61 billion in 2015 and progressed to N30.96 billion last year.

Business Post also gathered from the NBS data that Ekiti State's IGR declined from N3.79 billion in 2012 to N3.29 billion in 2015 and further slipped to N2.99 billion in 2016.

For Ebonyi State, the lowest in 2016, increased from N8.23 billion in 2012 to N11.03 billion in 2014, but fell to N2.34 billion last year.

Why won't it lead when it has only the two functional ports and airport in the country? If you Yorubaa have conscience you will plead for other states like Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Anambra to have their ports functional too.
