An unmarried couple have been
stoned to death in northeast Mali, the
first brutal incident of its kind to have
occurred since jihadist groups were
expelled from the region in 2013.
Islamic jihadists took control of
northern cities in March 2012, but
despite being ousted from power by
French military forces in 2013 they
still undertake frequent attacks on
domestic and foreign forces.


The brutal death occurred in Taghlit,
in the Kidal region, on Tuesday night
and members of the public were
reportedly invited to take part.
A local official confirmed: ‘The
Islamists dug two holes where they
put the man and the woman who
lived maritally without being married.
‘They were stoned to death.’
The horrific act came only days
before French President Emmanuel
Macron travels to Mali, where he is
due to meet troops on Thursday or
Friday.


Condemning the murder, the Malian
Association for the Defence of Human
Rights (AMDH) branded it ‘cowardly’.

Oumar Diakite, an AMDH official,
said: ‘This is barbaric. The people
who did this should be arrested and
put on trial.’
A 2015 peace treaty signed by rebels
aimed to quell violence in the
northern regions of Mali, but critics
claim that it has not been properly
implemented – and jihadists, who
did not sign up to the treaty,
continue to mount attacks on both
civilians and the Army.
