CHAPTER ONE

‘It’s a girl.’ She declared grinning.
Salome's mother stood up with the child in her hands and made towards the door.

‘Where are you going? It’s raining cats and dogs out there.

But she ignored her and continued moving, with vacant eyes as she went out into the heavy downpour.
She then lifted the crying baby, amidst thunderstorms and began:

Gods of our fathers!
Thank you for this blessing
The rain you held back for years
You’ve chosen tonight to give to us
A night marred with curse and blessings
Drenched in joy and anguish
With tears and laughter
Arise and pour your blessings upon her
Like this incessant drops of rain
Shower her in wisdom and might
And like the voice of the thunder
Let her greatness echo all over the world
And may she shine like the lightning
Upon the face of the earth

She drew the child closer, and whispered, ‘today child, I call you Rain.’

#Chapter 13

This part of Lagos looked different, it was more serene, less crowdy with tall trees and flowery shrubs lining the neat roads. Towering buildings and smiling billboards stood in their elegance. Everything screamed of opulence. It was such a beautiful sight such that Rain couldn't take her eyes off the view.

"You should go out more often" Segun said glancing over his shoulders. He steered the wheels with an and the other rested on the car window.

She tore her gaze from outside and turned to look at him. "You all can go on thinking I have no life, I don't care one bit"

"Well I didn't say so but since you brought it up, I'm curious to know why. Apparently your roommate is enough to increase your social life top notch, but it doesn't seem..."

"Look, you don't know me okay, you come up claiming to be my brother but you don't know my story same as I don't know yours" she yapped "You and Meggy can think whatever you want, I don't care".

" Okay sassy, but you do care about fulfilling your lifelong dream of meeting your Dad, isn't it? Isn't that why you're trusting a 'stranger'? You know, we have a lot in common.

She simply brushed the straying hairs off her face, ignoring him.

She saw him smile, from the corners of her eyes. He looked calm and relaxed like he got his life together. She almost envied him.

"So do you have other sisters or brothers?"

"No" was all he said. She stared at him quietly for a while then turned and continued looking out her side window.
He stepped on the brakes and made a left turn. The street they now drove by looked almost desolate but beautiful. She concluded the occupants of the big houses must be rich and have good taste.
They arrived in front of a fenced building and Segun blared the horns repeatedly before an aged man came to open the gate. He parked and they climbed down from the car.

"Lukman, how many times do I have to warn you to stop sleeping on duty? Or you think say I can't replace you if I want?" Rain placed a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing at his funny pidgin language.

"Oga sorry wallahi no bex, this one e no go haffen again ai sweaar" he touched a finger on the inter logged ground, brought out his tongue and touched it too before pointing the finger up. Rain laughed at the dramatic scene before her, her dimples sinking inside. "Your gateman is funny".

" Don't mind him, I'm just respecting my mom that's why I haven't sacked him". He opened a wide door and they entered. "Welcome to my humble home he said after switching on the lights.
Rains eyes widened as she took in the sheer beauty before her. The sitting room was big and tastely furnished with a golden chandelier hanging at the centre. It matched with the high curtains and reflected on the tiled marble floor. Every where was polished spick -and-span; they either have a house help or are extremely neat, she thought. Honors and awards of various caliber were all over the place, they bore the names Dr. Bisola Ishola. As she toured the room briefly her eyes rested on a large pencil drawn portrait, it hung proudly on the wall. It bore a beautiful woman with an almost child-like smile and stout jaws. She noted the subtle traces of resemblance between the woman and Segun. Even though their eyes and nose bore no resemblance, he had her harsh forehead and slightly protruding lips.

Curious she asked, "who is she?"

"My mom" he replied

"She's beautiful"

"Thank you he said absentmindedly.
She turned and watched him change channels on the big plasma TV.

" You have a beautiful place too, I'm impressed" her tiny voice overshadowed by the sound coming from the TV.

"Thank you" he grimaced "please make yourself comfortable. I'll be right back" he said and kept down the remote control.

Rain sat herself on one of the conversationally arranged sofas. It was brown in colour and soft against her buttocks. He came back in shortly with a bottled water and glass cups. He's changed into a checkered three quarter shorts and slippers.

"Thank you" she said and poured herself some to drink as she pretended to be interested in the opera showing.

"So what about your parents or relatives?" She leaned forward pressing her lips.

"There's no one. It's just me".

" I don't underground. You live alone in this big house? " her brows arched.

"Yea, I live here alone" he smiled, hiding his pains.

She had more questions to ask, 'what about his mom?' She felt tempted to ask but when she looked at him now, she felt sympathy for him. Or was it fear, but she was strangely comfortable around him. Indeed they had something in common, she was sure of that now.

"Are you ready?" He asked, breaking her thoughts.

"Yes" she straightened up and swallowed.

"Come with me".

Whoa! I'm totally blown away. I didn't even know the story was still running, thought you had packed up already. That explains why I haven't commented in a while. You have really improved, very well! Your tenses are fixed (albeit a few errors). I like the mild comparisons you make. Then, watch your punctuations. All that's required of you now is a great writing style. Almost every one can tell a story but style is very important. The average writer has no style. Create an imprint for your art. Write in a distinct manner such that anyone would identify your works even without your name or anything. I want you to be great.

Chapter 14

Rain followed Segun closely behind, her thoughts swaying like the flay black skirt she was wearing. She kept wondering what other revelations about her dad she was about to find out, a part of her was scared and confused, the other curious. She was stopped in the middle of her wandering thoughts when a cat meowed from behind. She turned, stooped and rubbed its head, smiling a little.
"He's so cute" she said smiling
"thats Mercy" he replied watching her "she was my moms"
"did she travel? your mom" she inquired, rising up and smoothening her skirt.
"She's dead" anger flashed a little in his eyes
Her shock was open "what happened? I'm so sorry..I..I ne..ver knew" her lips trembled.
"Its okay" he said, back in his usual gallant tone as he led her into another room.
" And here is my office" he said walked to the desk and began shoving some papers aside in an attempt to clear the table "sorry about the mess, i do alot of work in here"
"Its beautiful, nice, i like your office" Rain said, impressed. Typically a mans domain, he obviously wen the extra miles to make it look this classy. her eyes scanned every detail briefly, too in a hurry to see the next item. A big painting of a picturesque landscape hung on the plain white walls, it seemed he loved painting and space. Adjacent it was an extension made of glass overlooking a lush garden behind, it was a beautiful view.
"Boy, you do have taste!"
"I'm glad you think so" he said with a smile, satisfied by her amusement "It's my favorite part of the ouse so i thought it should at least be comfortable.
"Comfortable? thats an understatement, this is luxury" she said as she sauntered towards the book shelf
"hmm, I see you love motivational books"
"Yea, they come in handy at times"
"Mm hmm thats cool"
"What about you? okay no let me guess, you prefer sci-fi?(she shook her head) medical? (she continued to shake her head) okay history?"
"You're so funny" she laughed
"Lets just say I'm a compulsive reader, I read all of the above"
"You sure, okay thats possible but you must have a favourite genre" he said tapping away into his laptop
"Crime and thriller"
"Youre kidding" he exclaimed
"Yea my grandma introduced me to such books at a very early age, they were from her master, he kept a huge collection of books; Hadley Chases', Shakespeares, Saul Bellows, James Patterson, name them, nothing like I've seen since"
"Wow, that explains it, you don't sound like where youre from" he said admiringly "people from that part of the world are not as keen towards books"
"you cant be so sure" she sat herself down on one of the seats across, facing him. "I had this friend, Michael, Michael and I would go into the woods, climb to the top of trees and read every day, i remember we'd discuss what we read and our childish fantasies to each other while eating mangoes or guavas" she smiled longingly
"Okay, I think we should get down to business already. Take a look" he turned the laptop to face her.
The light disappeared from her eyes, with a grave look replacing it.
It was him, her Dad.
Name: Ramachandran Kumar
Occupation: Senior consultant and physician at Renaissance Hospitals Rwanda
Date of Birth: 17/12/1974
Address: 12 New Creek drive, Renaissance quarters, Kampala, Uganda.
Family: Rahab Kumar(wife), Peninah(daughter) and John (son)
Hobbies: Hiking

"How were you able to access all these information?" She finally said after staring at the screen for almost 10minutes
"Same way I found you, only yours was much harder. Unlike you, he's on Facebook!"
"I have an email" she protested
"Tell that to me five years ago"
"Okay I was just 18 and fresh from college?" She splayed her hands as if asking for a justification to his accusation.
He said nothing and wore a vacant expression.

"You haven't still explained how you got to know me, my grandma... everything"

"All thanks to your last school, they had all your data on their website"
"And you had access to my account just like that?"
"I hack for a living, remember?"
Not quite satisfied, "how did you know my name?" She asked further.
"Nana told us about you "
"Who's 'us' ?" She asked scrutinizing his face
"They knew each other, my mom and your grandma, didn't she tell you?"
She looked away "so...your mom met my dad, you've...seen.. him before?"
"I have," he stood, went over to the fridge and pulled out two bottles of beer " You care for some? "
"No thank you. I don't... I'll just have soft drink, if you have it."

He smiled and dropped a bottle of five alive juice and a glass cup before her.
She poured herself some and drank, relishing its coldness against her boiling nerves.
She laughed as she thought of how wrong and thoroughly ignorant she had been. She felt so silly as she imagined herself going to meet her dad, in India, how she had pictured herself jumping into his waiting arms.
"You need to rest, now" he said carefully not sure on how to place her reaction
He was right, she thought, after all she has her exams the next week to prepare for and this was all too much to take in.
