What makes a seaport function... its populace, the moment you loose population.. the revenue drops drastically..

For togo and benin- its our importation of vehicles and diverting of oil vessels that grew their seaport.. ask them how they are feeling now..

For lagos decending to the level of togo and benin, thats a very low low.

Lagos has developed so much that in event Nigeria splits, the south west alone cant afford to maintain Lagos. The tax would be over bearing...

London had to export education, medical, finished produce and join EU thereby making their visa's friendly just to import populace to grow IGR.

Usa has a population of over 300m and dont need extra population, they have gotten population of different diverse groups and nations long before Nigeria was created.

Africa has nothing to give the global world except population.

If we loose it, we loose all... united we stand

am sorry brother I think you are daft for this comment,

south Africa population is 54million
UK 64 million
UAE 9 million
Singapore 5million
France 66 million
Canada 36 million etc etc
all these countries above are better than Nigeria (180 million).

if you think a country needs a lot of population to prosper apart from USA(approximately 330 million ), then your are dreaming ...

what can you say about India(the most poorest people in the world but not the most poorest country) 1.31 billion, divide their wealth among the citizens and see what remains ...the same thing applicable to Countries listed below ....
China ( most of them are not living better than Nigerians but second richest country in the world ) 1.37 billion
Indonesia 257 million

First dont start a statement with ode... it ridicules the whole idea...

If the nation splits... populace would reduce drastically and visa's would be worthless because their is no business.. ask zambia and co
where do you obtain igr from?

Most people would move enmass to their fatherlands including non lagos indigenes but yorubas.. due to tax overbearing because the SW alone cannot afford to maintain lagos, same as abuja.

It would be a vice versa scenerio... lagos is commerce, commerce trives with population. It would be a trade by batter scenerio (exchange)... if you inflate the fares to supply you neccessary goods, the buying power would reduce, reduce govt earnings and supposed IGR. Thereby even chasing away the little or no population. And even pushing the IGR lower. Evaded taxes would be long gone as a new system would emerge and the scare not to chase the little available population. Other states would open up and dredge their rivers to take that which you have refused to accept.

Nigeria is balanced and blessed.. if we distort the system its a loose loose situation for all.. we wont be great again.. that is why a re-structure to calm frayed nerves is far better and beneficial than dissolution...

United we stand. So we should all fight for a united Nigeria, we need each other more.

Note, am a de-tribalized Nigerian

Oga, Nigeria had many seaports back in the 70s... when democracy took over, our politicians lobbied for other seaports to stop functioning...like in d case of Cross river state seaports...

Again, lagos is only makin that huge impact via the seaport alone, as many itemz get to be shipped from lagos to overseas and its charges helps to develope the state....

Akwa ibom have acquire a portion of land by the governor udom to build a seaport... and Cross river governor have started a project on revamping its seaports as well... when these projects are completed, you will see for urself how lagos state will lose its standard via its income from seaport charges...

Crudes are shipped from lagos.. products (both raw and defined products) takes off from lagos.. and lands from lagos before it's transported to other states....

LOL. As of today, all the dues paid at the ports go straight to the FG's coffers - no dime is given to Lagos. All corporate taxes and VATs paid in Lagos also go to the FG - no dime given to Lagos. Go on - hating Laogs is very fashionable these days.

Good morning

Good, south Africa has lots of minerals to sustain it and to trade.
A coutry in which the president had to come to Nigeria to beg on behalf of MTN, thats to tell you how deadly a closure of their business would be on that country.

Now what does a seperate Nigeria region have to export aside minerals?

Uk.... what was the pupose of joining the EU? Which involves trade among all EU nations as one country.
Do you know UK is going through mild recession and taxes have gone high for govt to raise funds, as well as cost of goods has also gone up Due to brexit despite all they export - education, medical, finished produce etc

What does Nigeria have to export asides mineral? Why did the crash in oil lead us into recession?

UAE is a major oil export country.... SW,SE, North does nt have it..

Singapore.... read up on singapour and you would see its relationship with China. (74% of its population are chinese)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore

France - EU country....

Canada - why are their borders open and even giving permanent resident if you can invest $1m dollars into their economy..
Projecting their schools to africa to sell education, despite having oil in some quantity, trying to generate strong trading lines with America a populous country.

In essence.... we together as Nigeria gives us a bargaining power.. since we have just minerals to export.

Moreover what about countries like uganda, zambia, guinea, kenya, tanzania, they have small populations, why are they not fairing better?

Hello again, my friend,

I really like your argument. But I'm afraid you are not quite right in some aspects.

1. For instance, *Lagos would be de-mystified in event the country splits... obviously lagos would loose its popularity and value.*
On the contrary, even though I am not speaking with a definitive tone, I think every right-thinking person will wanna go to where business, inter-communal commerce, a gateway to entire world, viable structure, prospective business climate is assured. Lagos is the region that boast of these attributes. So, value will be increased, not decreased.

2. *Population would reduce drastically... thereby, tax would go to the utmost low, IGR would reduce drastically*
In the even that number 1 above happen, Lagos will experience astronomical increase in population, sharp increase in everything including food, shelter and clothing. Crime will surge to its highest. There will be a massive rise in taxes. Lagos government will find very difficult to cope, but will eventually do. You know why, Lagos works. People like certainty. Lagos gives that. No state...I repeat...NO STATE gives hope for survival more than Lagos.

3. *south east (to many businesses with no buying power*
I totally disagree with this notion.. Yes, South East is industrial power house of Nigeria today. And guess what, that is the key to survival. They don't have to sell their product in the south east. They export to other regions who will MOST DEFINITELY depend on them to drive their own local economy. This makes the south east a PRODUCING ECONOMY. Their nothing better than a producing economy my friend. The south east will definitely survive. Their strength is their Ingenuity.

Abeg, make I go watch movies joor.

Good.... thankyou for not insulting me like the rest.
Yes we all pray for the best

On lagos... do you think other regions having their seaport and control of their economy wont grow theirs most especially the SE like you claim are industrious and would want to export that.

It is only because we are Nigerians we call it a commercial hub.. the moment we split, that goes.. why is ghana, kenya and other african states not making lagos or abuja their commercial hub?

Same would be for other nigerian regions(countries then)..

2...the rise in taxes would drive population away, because there would be other optional viable countries without restricting rules. Moreover its not like lagos would have the buying power anymore. Uk is going through that now as a result of brexit and wanting a revote.

3. SE... that would work significantly. But a united Nigeria would make trade within easiest with our population..

Thank you, i like your argument and analysis..

Hey there, I agree with you to some extent. But you really have missed the point.

You see, Lagos survived the federal vindictive policies during obasanjo's regime. That was a game changer on how Lagos operates. Till today, Lagos exists independently of what Nigeria to a very large extent.

And yes, it means Lagos can survive without oil.

Then, you said people will emigrate to their home regions, and so Lagos people wont't be able to maintain Lagos, right? Now, let me ask you a question. As a business man, would rather you relocate to a region where you are expected to start from the scratch, or stay in Lagos where you have established yourslef and pay your tax? I guess you know the answer.

You see, truth is, there will challenges here and there, but no successful and well-established person will leave Lagos, if Nigeria splits tomorrow. Lagos has grown beyond tribal sentiment. It has freed itself of religion bigotry. It is the only metropolitan city in Nigeria. If Nigerians can go London and pay taxes through their nose, then, Lagos will run and survive very well. I can't say the same for any state in Nigeria.

I agree with you though on "strength in population"... But I bet to differ on Lagos crashing if we go the true federalism way.or if the nation splits.

Good morning... you are right on your analysis very well but..

Lagos survived the obasanjo vindictive policies due to Tinubus ingenuity and brillance to tax the growing populace..

In event Nigeria splits..
*Xtics
Taxes would go even higher..
You should also note that other regions would open up to a competitive game since they are in full control of their economy thereby moving to less cost of living areas.

If i was a business man.... i look for where to break even.. if a country makes it too difficult for me, i move to the next.. we have noticed that a lot of manufacturing hubs either have closed shop in Nigeria or moved to neigbouring countries because business seems easier there for them while they export to Nigeria (one of the reason we closed out borders to every item manufacturing companies can produce here) ... factories moved to ogun because of
Less tax and still have direct access to lagos population..

Uk exports a lot of other things - education, medical, tourism, finished produce... at the same time have more than enough reserve to carry them through rough terrain.. despite that the brexit is hitting them hard and most non-indegenes are moving to other EU countries to make a living...
Lagos does not have those exports.

Uk about 64m population and about $163b reserve.
Nigeria 200m+ and just $30b reserves.. on even of a split each region gets about $5b each with little or nothing to export out. An estimate of 50m population with $5b, we would be in line with ivory coast, which would even be a better country because they have stabilized while we are still trying to.

We pray for the best.. but its good we see reason why we need each othermore than we need ourselves..we are blessed in the right measures.
