It depends on the usage of the word. Some people use it derogatorily to slight someone esp. When you feel u cannot respect the person I mean here in Nigeria. Infact someone said same to me last week and it didn't go down well with me I .must confess though I didn't show him I was angry but replied him back with "how is it" just to show him I know the motive behinde his "How are you". After all is not someone am so familiar with. Respect is reciprocal o. 1 Like |

hoe about it he should have asked this way How are you doing today sir?. I think it comes very polite that way because people might be educated but their mentality to ways of life is low. |

I remembered a scenario in my place of work. My colleague and a Supervisor; As soon as the supervisor stepped into the office Colleague: well done sir Supervisor: Puis, What did you say now?(frowning ) Colleague: I said "welcome sir"! After the supervisor had gone we all bust into laughter...my colleague was like ,"that man na mumu o". |
You can always ask me "How are you?" No Problem at all and my reply is always " I'm very well thank you". What I hate however, what I detest , what annoys me, what I find offensive, what gets me mad , is the ignorant and illogical silly greeting/question which goes like this - " How was your night?". This question sends me into a rage I often - actually always don't know what to say as a response but my whole day can be ruined by that stupid meaningless and ignorant nonsensical illiterate greeting.
But sir, I don't see anything wrong about the question, "how was your night?" |

That's how someone I am 7 years older than sent me "hi, how are you" on whatsapp and I ignored him. I have been thinking maybe I'm just old-fashioned. But when I translated it into Yoruba, what I could come up with was "Pele, bawo ni". Then I felt justified |

So far as naija is concerned.. The statement "HOW ARE YOU" is asked by an elder one to a younger one and/or for lovers |

kayceeD2: My friend; erase that Naija mentality from your head...don't forget about "individual differences"... Not all parents are the same thing! Maybe your dad might do that to you; but my parent would not do that to me because they are well schooled and enlightened. |

I'm sorry , may be I'm exeggerating my disgust. But the truth is that this is not an English greeting. The morning greeting in English is simply - Good Morning and the response is also good morning or simply - morning. |

This is a very touchy subject because majority of Nigerians see the 'stereotype' in asking or answering this question. We (i inclusive..unconsciously dat is..lol) temd to see this question as 'de-meaning' rather than gratifying as is intended or shd be intended by the questioner. Infact, like op has stated, this question as rhetorical as Nigerians ask it-has fetched some individuals thier fair share of slaps! However, it is a harmless question that will require both the questioner & questionee a great deal of patience, maturity & understanding to handle. 2 Likes |
