He was never made president.
The military was in power, they grudgingly agreed to have democracy in Nigeria, since there was a lot of international pressure against getting into power through force.
The winner of the election was Abiola. He contested against against a Hausa man. Even in the North, Abiola won. Till date, its still considered the most peaceful and fairest of elections in Nigeria. I still remember the jingles/slogan on TV- "MKO, MKO, MKO Action, Abiola,Abiola,Abiola- Progress"
However, the dictator in power refused to give him his mandate. Nigerians voted for him, but the military refused to relinquish power. The election was annulled for no reasons.
He decided to declare himself president, and got a lot of support. People were tired of the military rule. There were riots against the military govt in power.
It got so tense that even the evil genius-IBB stepped down for an interim civilian govt Ernest Shonekan, for things to cool down (IBB and Abiola were incidentally close friends, but apparently the friendship no reach power levels)
Shonekan didn't even spend up to 6months before another military coup occurred and Abacha took over from the interim govt.
Abacha arrested Abiola and kept him in prison. His wife- Kudirat continued the aluta, and she was assassinated. A woman of valor.
Incidentally, Abacha died after like 5years. They said he ate poisoned apples given to him by Indian escorts. I don't know how true that is.
Abiola thought he would be freed from prison then, but the powers that be also poisoned him in prison , a month after Abacha died.
