Edward got to the village hall where the campaign was to take place. He was amused by the number of people that were there for the campaign. It wasn't easy getting his way into the hall due to the tight space in the entrance, he had to squeeze himself through.

Everybody was sitting in wait for the arrival Mr Nicolas. Edward himself couldn't help but be eager. Since when he was a child, he had always heard people talking about a certain chief Nicolas but he hasn't even for once seen him. That day was his perfect opportunity and he wouldn't miss it for anything.

After waiting for nearly thirty minutes, Edward was already getting impatient. "This is one reason why am so obsessed with politicians. They think they are gods that should be worshipped" He murmured.

He was tired of waiting and just when he was about to get up and live, the noise coming from outside had him paused. He gave a gaze through the window of the building and saw a convoy heading into compound of the building. He saw people jumping up and down with banners and posters screaming Chief Nicolas this chief Nicolas that. When his eyes could no longer see the cars through the window, his focus was back on the door

In a short while, the door was clear and a path was created in the middle of the numerous number of people. Edward sat quietly watching the drama.
A group of people walked into the door led by two armed guards at the front and two behind, living three at the door. In the middle of the guards, he saw a man of not more than forty years of age alongside a woman. They were looking rich and from the way he saw people trying to reach out to them, he could easily say that was Chief Nicolas. He was surprised why such a young man will be referred to as a chief. He was actually expecting to see an older man.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let's put our hands together to welcome on stage the the candidate for the state gubernatorial election, he is no other person but Chief Nicolas, the sole proprietor of Nicola's Cement Enterprise of Kafanchan" The announcer had praised.

A cacophony of noise could be heard emernating from the hall as people shouted and screamed in cheers.
Nicolas walked his way to the stage accompanied by one of the guards. Edward was right, the young man is indeed Nicolas.

"I do not stand before you people of Lowcoast community to full your heads with false promises. But I demand that you all give me your trust although it is one thing that is very difficult to ask for in this present time. I know your hearts have been broken by previous politicians who have deceived you into giving them your trust after which they forget about you. I want to assure you that this won't be the same case. I have the masses at heart and as I know their struggles in life considering that I was once like you. .........." Nicolas preached non stop for up to an hour trying to convince the people into voting for him.
Edward was carried away by his beautiful speech. He didn't boast like most politicians do. Edward couldn't help but admire him, he was looking very smart and sounded intelligent."This man is really an honourable person and sincere too" he muttered.

After Nicolas' long speech, the people were given the liberty to ask questions or complain about anything they had a confusion about. It is a known fact that people are afraid of politicians and as such feel tensed to ask or confront them about matters that affect them.
Edward was disappointed about the way everyone was quiet at the hall. No one was bold enough to speak up despite having numerous problems with social services.
Everyone was filled with awe when they saw Edward stood up to speak.
He gave out a very remarkable speech that left everybody clapping in screaming his name. Nicolas was very impressed with him. He was surprised that such a community will have intelligent pupils like Edward.
All through the campaign, Nicolas could not help but stare at Edward who was sitting from a distance in the crowd.
Apart from Edward's courage and intelligent speech, there was something about him that seemed to awaken the past in chief Nicolas' heart. His voice reminded him of his childhood love whom he had lost to the cold hands of dead.
After the campaign process, Chief Nicolas instructed his guards to ask Edward to wait. He stood outside wondering why he was delayed from going home. After a ten minutes of waiting, chief Nicolas arrived smiling at him as though they were friends.

"What did you say is that your name ?" Mr Nicolas inquired.
"My name is Edward George" Edward replied politely.

"Wow! I am quiet impress by your courage and intelligence. I am really surprised that communities like this have intelligent brains like you." He said.

"Thank you sir" Edward thanked.

"Where do you study ? " Nicolas asked.

"The state's university" Edward replied.

"That is good, but I can help transfer you to a better university if you wish and there you won't have to worry about the fees because I will be in charge of everything." He said.

Edward was pleased with the offer and was confused about what to say. He turned his face towards Mrs Nicolas and the look on her face was murderous.

"Chief, why don't you let the boy think first. You know this is not s decision he can take alone, his parents have to be involved you know." Mrs Nicolas said.

"Who are your parents" Nicolas asked.

Edward remembered that his mum had warned him to steer clear off the rich people because they had nothing in common. He didn't wanted to bring troubles to himself or his mum so he opted to live.
"Sir please I have to go now." He announced and left.


Chief Nicolas tried stopping him to at least get some information about him but Edward had gone.


Throughout the ride home, Nicolas wasn't himself. He couldn't stop hearing Edwards voice ringing in his ears, his eyes and complexion were exactly that of Elizabeth his childhood love.
"I must do something to help this boy. Something about him excites me and I can't help but like him as though he was my son." He muttered to himself.

Mrs Nicolas was filled with fear and anger at same time. Fear because it was really odd how Nicolas acted when he saw Edward. Anger because he was ready to transfer him to a better to than that of Bella their child. She didn't understood why he fell for that boy.
She had wanted to talk about it on the way but decided to keep mute till they got home.

I knew it that Edward is kinda related to the Nicholas.

Ok na...so Nicholas may be Edward's father

"Mum, mum, mum where are you ?" Edward shout in excitement like he had won a lottery.
Mrs Elizabeth stopped cutting the vegetables in the kitchen and rushed out to know why her dear son was excited.
"Why are you like this ? The last time I saw you like this was when I bought you Christmas clothes five years ago. So tell me what is it this time around " Elizabeth asked.
"Mum, guess what " He said.

"You know am not good with guessing" She replied.

"Mum, chief Nicolas offered to transfer me to a better institution of my choice.That he could work a way for me to be transfered and possibly have my masters afterwards. And in all these, you won't have to worry about the fees because all will be on him" he told Hus mum.

"Chaiii, this boy have killed me" Elizabeth said with disappointment.

Edwards countenance changed immediately and confusion took the better part of him.

"Mum I don't understand you" He manage to say.

"You kids of nowadays are very stubborn. Didn't I warned you to steer clear off those people ?,Ok how did you even met with him because I know you weren't the only person that needed help there" She asked.

"Mum he asked me to wait after I made a speech during the campaign. He said my voice reminded him of his late childhood love and he that he wanted to help me" Edward narrated.

"Edward listen and listen good, should be the last time you ever see that man again. He should go and help the less previledged at orphanages because I didn't complain or said I needed anyone's help. Please avoid them" She warned.

"Mum seriously I don't understand you even a bit. First, you tried stopping me from going to the campaign and now you are scolding me for speaking my mind at the campaign and winning someone's love ?. Mum please I don't get it, why are you acting weird ?" He asked getting alarmed.
"My son am only concerned about your well being, I don't want the rich to take advantage of you simply because you are poor" She said.

"Mum no one is taking advantage of anybody here. Rather, this man is ready to help us out of this difficult situation of ours, besides he doesn't even look harmful like other politicians I have seen. Mum I really like the man" Edward said and walked away.

Mrs Elizabeth stood with her legs shaking. She had warned Edward not to go for that campaign but he was too stubborn to listen.
"My secrets are about to be brought to light. I am sorry son for putting you in such condition, but its the best for all of us and I hope you will understand the reasons for this decision of mine" She soliloquiesed.



"Nicolas, you still haven't explained the reason why you had to be so nice to that poor kid at the campaign" Mrs Nicolas said forming anger towards her husband.

"My dear I just wanted to help the poor boy. He really is intelligent and I don't want to watch such brain get wasted." Nicolas replied.

"Are you sure that's all the reason why you did that ?" Mrs Nicolas asked.

"What other possible reasons would I have ?. You know I am aspiring for a post and it would boost the people's love and trust for me if I start helping then already" He explained.

"Hmmm, I just wish you are telling the truth because the way you stared at that boy was way more than just a gesture towards boosting some political trust. I have a hunch that you are keeping something from me" She said.

"My dear, you do not suppose that I am cheating on you , do you ?. Please I don't want to believe that because I shall be disappointed and won't help but feel uneasy that my love for you hasn't been enough to win your trust" He said.

"My love, please do not leave us alone " She said giving her husband a hug.

"I have told you time without number that you and Bella are my one and true family and it would be foolish of me to let go of you" He replied patting her back.


After the long hug, they released each other and Nicolas went up the stairs leaving his wife down.

Mrs Nicolas was gripped with fear. The way Nicolas showed affection towards that Edward of a guy was too much. She flashed to the past and her brains told her some things.
"I am sure that it isn't what I think. Gerald carried out the operation as u instructed him and I know that Elizabeth is dead and buried twenty years ago. I should get rid of this crazy thoughts of mind" She told herself.

The following day, Nicolas couldn't stopped talking about Edward at the dinning table. He had a night full of thought about Edward. In the night, the thoughts didn't only stopped at Edward but also Elizabeth. He remember how they were when they were kids and how he was heart broken when he heard about her dead, he was not even there to bit her goodbye.

Mrs Nicolas saw how worried and how bent Nicolas was on that boy. She resulted in calling Gerald after the breakfast to confirm about the operation.

"Hello my lovely Stella" Gerald had answered from the other side of the phone.

"Gerald I am not in for any of your dump jokes now" She said to him.

"Oh! I should have known because you have been like this since the day you threw away my unending love away and broke the agreement we had." He fired st her.

"Gerald please I am not ready to start digging the past now but I just want to ask you and I hope you give me a sincere answer" She said.

"Hmmmm, you have finally decided to be serious ?, okay go on and ask" He told her.

"Its about Elizabeth, did you killed her as instructed" She asked.

"Hahaha" Gerald gave out a wicked laugh before continuing. "You said you don't want to talk about the past yet you are asking me about something that transpired twenty years ago"

"Please just answer me now Gerald" She said.


"You are really dump headed to ask me such a question Was it not with you that I went to the grave were Elizabeth and her three months pregnancy was buried ?. I personally killed her with my bear hands." He assured her.

"Gerald if you did killed her, why can't I stop thinking about her. Why does it always seemed to me that my happiness is for a while" She said.

"I don't know but I think its because you are a traitor. I fulfilled my side of the bargain but you were blinded by riches forgot about me. I guess that God is paying for me" Gerald mocked and hung up.

Days had gone by and had turned to weeks,two weeks to be precise.
Khalifa checked in the refrigerator and there was not even a single drink, he turned to his dad who was lying on the bed to ask for money so he could get some but was shocked when his dad told him he had no money.

" You don't mean it dad,do you ?" He asked.

"Do I look like someone who is jokingl ?, the money is damn finished" Gerald replied sitting upright.

Khalifa stood for a moment trying to figure out what to do but didn't seemed to have gotten any idea.
"Dad what do we do now" He asked his dad.

"You know what to do. Its time to strike Alex and I think their won't be any suspicions." Gerald replied.

"Dad don't you think we will look desperate ?, its only two weeks dad".

"My son two weeks was enough to erase any suspicions from anyone. I assure you that Alex will be waiting for you now so don't feel scared boy" Gerald convinced.

"But dad what if we get caught ?, this is impersonation and you know the penalty for that " khalifa cautioned.

"You have nothing to be scared of, we won't get caught and even if we get caught, you have nothing to worry about" He assured his son.

They discussed on how to go about with the plan without any error. Khalifa was filled with fear as that was the first time he was engaging in a criminal act unlike his dad. After deliberations about their plan, they agreed to proceed with the plan that day. They first of all took their bath so that they will sound good over the phone.

"Dad, their isn't enough airtime on the phone" Khalifa had complained to his dad.

"Don't you know how to borrow ? Borrow at least one thousand naira so that we won't have any problems with airtime" Gerald instructed.

Khalifa dialed some numbers and borrowed a thousand naira airtime. He breathed in and out heavily before dialing Alex's number.

"Hello Mr Khalifa Kroos, I am pleased to hear hear from you" Alex said from the other side of the call.

"Hi sir, I want to apologise for not being able to call since that day. I have been very busy with office work lately especially processing the contract and the procedures involved,it hasn't been easy" Khalifa said.

Gerald tapped him and instructed him to put the phone on loudspeaker.

"I understand, you do not have to explain. So I hope you have been doing good with the job ?" Alex asked. His voice was clear and on speaker.
"It hasn't been easy, but with the help of my colleagues, I have been able to process everything and would only need you to sign some documents after which you will deposit the amount I told you. When you do this, a contract worth billions will be yours" He persuaded.

After a long laughter of satisfaction and excitement, Alex thanked Khalifa for helping him with the contract and a date was fixed when they will finalise everything and get the money.

"Hahaha," Gerald release a wicked laugh after listening to the conversation between his son and Alex.
"Its time to get some money, Alex am sorry that you have to be the victim" He said.

Khalifa was shocked to see his dad brought out five thousand naira note and ask that they should celebrate.

"I though you said you don't have money ?" Khalifa asked.

"That was the only way to have you speed up the mission" Gerald said.

Khalifa left ad came back with bottles



*********** Meanwhile, Mr and Mrs Nicolas' family haven't been themselves for the past two weeks. Chief Nicolas had been very worried about the boy he me at the campaign and couldn't stop talking about him. He missed his foods and absented himself from office, he was beginning to lose weight and everyone was confused about his attitude.
Mrs Nicolas was also losing it. Her husband was the only thing that mattered most to her and she wasn't ready to lose it to anyone. She thought through her mind about what could be the possible reasons for her husband's weird behavior but didn't got any thing.
"Perhaps my evil past is hunting me" She had thought.
"The only person that was capable of making him look this way was Elizabeth. If not that Elizabeth was killed, I would have said that she has something to do with that boy but Elizabeth was killed and buried twenty good years ago" She muttered to herself.

"But do I trust Gerald ?,what if he deceived me ? No, I will have to act fast before my secrets gets to light. I have to know about that boy before he destroy me" She had concluded.
