Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Monday described as hypocrites those calling for the extradition of a former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke from the United Kingdom (UK) to come home and defend herself over allegations of corruption.

Some Nigerians, led by ace musician, Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charly Boy and the former Director, New Media and Convener, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju had staged daily sit- outs at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in Abuja to demand the extradition of Diezani.

Speaking in a chat with INDEPENDENT, Sagay who described the group as ‘corruption fighting back’ said it is clear that these ones are afraid that the former Minister will be jailed in the UK and as such are demanding for her trial in Nigeria, hoping that she will be saved by Nigeria’s legal system.

“Those who want her here when she is already there and charges are being compiled against her are just dishonest and are hypocrites. They are people who are hoping that somehow if she manages to leave the UK and is tried here in Nigeria, her prosecution will not succeed and she will be free”

“ In my view, these people who want Diezani back in Nigeria belong to the group of corruption fighting back. Basically, they don’t want her prosecuted. They think once she gets here and she is given bail, that will be the end of the case. They believe our people here will not succeed in trying her which is a mistake because things have started improving here”.

Itsey Sagay is saying stylishly that, it is so hard to make a successful conviction in Nigeria. Fine!

Though I don't really understand much about "Area Fada's (Charly Boy) stand in Nigerian politics. Seeing Deji Adeyanju, being part of the protest group to extradite Diezani Alison-Madueke to face trial in Nigeria, one would surely get the signal that there is something fishy in the protest.

The protest looks like a proverbial "Thief applying to help in renovating the door and windows to one's room". Can't one just reason that the thief will only end up doing the renovation to his own advantage?

With the way things are going, I think Deji Adeyanju seems to be manipulating "Area Fada" to his sponsors' advantage. And so sad Area Fada is fast becoming an irony of the tag he carries, "ourmumudondo". Seems the mumu isn't done at all.

So is Sagay saying we have outsourced our justice system to the UK?

No! It's a matter where it works better, after all Ibori was found not guilty in Nigeria, but found guilty in the UK.

Is it because the protest was not organised by Buhari's propaganda machinery? Sagay has completely lost it.

Well sagay's words r harsh, in a nut shell, d area father feels she should answer for her sins, dat in it self is commendable. But the truth remains that its in the best interest of Nigeria as a country that she should face trial in the UK we all know how our justice system is here. They is no fair trial in Nigeria, especially when extremely rich people such as Deizain are involved. And at least it will save us the tribal war, nd d bias allegations of trial judges.
