Exactly!

If tade steal my Sade's ATM card, he can go change her phone number straight. He wont even bother using the ATM card again, just start using the USSD service to move out her money.

These guys at First Bank did not think this through at all. Thats if they thought about it at all

They're not fools, there sud be a confirmation code sent to the old fone number or email before new number can be accepted.

I think it's same procedure with top banks 'cause I did mine at a GTB branch office ATM without being told.

The instruction was just there at the machine. Now I get notifications on my new line.
yea... Just sensitizing those of my customers who aren't aware...

Access Bank does same thing na.
I got to know about this while using their machine. The instruction was just there.

DingBang,

what do you have to say about this:

Exactly!

go change her phone number straight.

card again, just start using the USSD
service to move out her money.

Any precautionary measure put inplace for this volnerabilty?

Just imagine having access to someone's visa debit card & pin. I can simply change phone number, change iPIN, shop & pay online!

If my phone number is changed without my consent, how do I get to know about it b4 serious harm is done?
Re: A Nairalander Explains Phonenumber Update Using ATMs For All Firstbank Customers by pitola: 1:08pm On Sep 18, 2017
SirKriz:
There's a vulnerability here. If somehow someone gets your Debit card, your pin and then changes your phone number, how will you even get to know on time to take actions?

What security measures are put in place to guard against scenarios like this?

Hello, normally your card should be 'what you have' , while your PIN should be 'what you know' alone, once you suspect any compromise it must be changed immediately, no Bank will be responsible for the security of your Card/PIN.When you lock the door to your apartment you keep the keys to yourself and not share it. I think the product is creative enough. Plus it is always safe you do not have a card on an account you have much funds in

calm down, ask if u don't know. with Gtbank, they send a text message to the current registered one that your card has been used to request for a change in phone number and they give a number to call if it isn't you. i believe first bank will do the same.
