WASHINGTON — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Monday on Nigeria to find and punish those responsible for the killings of more than 500 Christians in a wave of sectarian slaughter.

"We continue to urge all parties to exercise restraint," Clinton told reporters, adding the Nigerian government "should make sure the perpetrators are brought to justice."

Clinton addressed reporters during a press conference with Gabon President Ali Bongo after more than 500 people were reported killed in three Christian villages in the north of the country.

"The Nigerian government should ensure that the perpetrators of acts of violence are brought to justice under the rule of law and that human rights are respected as order is restored," the chief US diplomat said.

Yes we must put an end to all these senseless religion murders. . .
I can't help but wonder if Nigeria would be at a Civil war in the next 2-3
years from now. . .

You just had to sneak in this part, didn't you?

To be fair, you may also want to add the number of Nigerians killed in the South in reprisal attacks.

@topic,

Clinton should understand that the natural law of justice favors everyone.

If she is so concerned with this why then have we not seen those US soldiers who murdered and maimed innocent Iraqis including children and women with bullets, bombs etc based on lies from the former president of the US?

It is the same way the killers are lied to and brainwashed into thinking that by killing innocent people they are indeed doing the right thing to defend either their country or God.

I believe most Nigerians want justice but these foreigners who commit atrocities all over the world must understand that their atrocities cannot be excused simply because they are non Africans.

On the Jos issue proper we need to understand here that religion in itself cannot be responsible for this. We must focus on those powerful, wealthy and wicked elements who sponsor these killings to advance whatever evil plans they have.

Most of these killers I believe cannot afford to buy guns let alone coordinate such a plan without input from organized groups whether military or paramilitary as we know that they did this even when there was a curfew.

If those that sponsor these things could be identified and promptly executed then Nigeria will be better.

On a totally different note it is interesting to note that what a lot of Easterners especially Igbos went through more than 40 years ago is being replayed today in a state where the then head of state Gowon comes from and we all know the role he played during that time. What goes around comes around. Justice favors everyone, not a select few.

Nobody said the guns used were sophisticated assault rifles. Nigerian blacksmiths have been making locally made guns for over 50 years now.

There's no indication that any overly sophisticated attack plan was used. Nigerian tribes were fighting wars 400 years ago, it doesn't take a millitary mastermind to cook up a plan to sneak around static army locations and attack a defenseless village.

It all still boils down to religion at the end of the day. And i agree with you on the arrest and execution of the sponsors and the actual killers.
The main issue is that every single time this happens, the Government fails to make an example of the culprits. Enough is enough, we don't need any panel. What we need is JUSTICE!

The deaths of hundreds of women and children is in no way 'interesting' or 'justice'.

Do not be in a hurry to attempt to prove someone wrong unless you are correct in your analysis.

I cannot remember stating that they used sophisticated assault rifles. Maybe it is your own thought process here but I don't see how you expect people to plan something like this without input or advice from non settlers or farmers as the case may be.

While you have tried to arrive at one conclusion from the beginning - religion I must make it clear to you that it takes more than the obvious to analyse issues especially where there are lives involved.

texazzpete:

I never expected you to understand that part because on several occasions you have basically justified the killings of the Igbos in the past so drawing a parallel to this one is something you cannot come to terms with but a lot of us who faced similar things in the past will always draw that parallel and for many people who were actually involved in the civil war at that time they are grateful to God that in their lifetime they are seeing things like these play out even amongst those that conspired to kill their own.

On a very serious note, what will Mr Yakubu Gowon be thinking right now? Yester-years it was the Igbos, today, it is her assailants home state. Before our very eyes, the cycle will go round. There are rumours about Ibadan. And you know what?,  there is nothing you can do since it advances the course on one Nigeria.

If more villages will be wiped out in Jos or Ibadan or Hadeja or Damaturu, so be it and the status quo must remain because it serves the interest of One Nigeria. And there is no better time for 'elders' to watch their tongue than now because it is only a dog that eats back its vomit.

While you think about it, remember that 'It is better that we move slightly apart and survive, it is much worse that we move closer and perish in the collision'. It was the words of a sage about fifty years ago. If you have never shed tears about 1966, don't even try it now, otherwise, you will come across as an unprincipled character. I mean including Mrs Clinton.
