Abeg tell them oh! People just like to form deep. Its annoying as heck. Opera (mostly in Italian) has tonnes of non-Italian speaking fans, Classical Music ( almost exclusively instrumentals). folks refuse to give credit to people that come up with beats that gain international acclaim - its an art that should be respected. Check out the likes of Afro-jack, David Guetta, and DJ Dilla and our very own Don Jazzy. Jeez! People need to chill out with pseudo-intellectual musings.

Bullocks!

Music is simply defined as vocal or instrumental sounds or both, combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony or emotion. In simple terms, anything that sounds good to the ear.
Music is not just about lyrics but also sound and it is universal. If music were about lyrics alone, how would a world of different languages connect? Reason why Davido, Wizkid and co have fans from around the globe-including French speaking countries, portugese speaking countries. They would shut down any show in any of these countries where they have fans.
Some years back, Gangnam Style by the south Korean Pop star Psy, took the world by storm. Till date, it is one of the most watched songs on youtube. MAny people from around the world did not understand jack of what he was saying, but vibed to the beat-which is what music is all about.

Lol. I have some tasks for you sir/ma
- Look up how the grammies work and you shall find your answer
- Look up the history of said grammies and how hard hip hop tried to become relevant to it (i personally think they shouldnt have fought that hard for it anyways)
- Tell me why heavy metal bands almost never get any grammies in spite of their international acclaim.

victrick105:

since music is all about sound as you said, tell me why no nigerian musician has risen to the height of winning at least one grammy award....or do you think to win such an award involves only the best of sounds, they check out your lyrics and the ryhmes, and the rythme of your songs, they don't just give such a prestigious award to one clown who wakes up one morning, goes into the studio, and starts screaming down the roof....if music is only based on sound and beat as you say, then the likes of jayz, beyonce and rihanna won't see our musicians back.

why do black people base their worth on approval by white people?

The sooner yoi emancipate yourself from mental slavery, the better for you. They win AFRIMMA and MOBO awards, even Soul Train and BET....A Grammy is only meaningful to a few misled souls. Even the great Fela did not win a Grammy, is it because he was not good enough?

Bros abeg talk another thing.

point of correction....grammy is an international or worldwide award BET and afrima is limited to the blacks, and it speaks alot to acheive such and even more internationally....unless you want to limit yourself to been a local champiom by winning locally hosted awards....itz like saying the super eagles can keep winning the CAF but should not borther to get to the heights of winning the world cup....to be the best, u have to beat the best in every aspect.

97% ? How did she arrive at the figure? Some people can like to form statistician oh. Shoo!!

queensera:
In her recent speech with Hip TV, the super star OAP & Actress "Lolo1" stated that most songs being publicized right now are just about having fun.

She expressed disappointment at the present state of affairs being a far cry from what was obtainable in the past.

“I’m not sure if they’re passing any message because if you are looking at the content of music, what will you say you’re buying? It’s not that everybody talks crap but 97% of it has no meaning. ‘Bangdadadang’, what does that mean? ‘Skibidipapap’, doesn’t have any meaning, ‘Wo!’, it’s just play, we are just having [fun]

“It’s not like the music of Obey, Barrister, Sunny Ade, they had depth, they had what they wanted to pass, even though we have people here in this current generation that are doing conscious music, Fela was a great advocate, he did a lot of social impact in music.. but in this generation, i’m not sure” She said.

Get this nonsense out of here. There's no place for bigotry in music. You are Nigerian at the end of the day. When you leave the country no one sees you as hausa/ibo/yoruba. They will simply classify you as a either nigerian/african.

JikanBaura:
undecided You mean English Pidgin songs grin. How many Nigerians singers sang in English language you understand tO have said 97% of Nigerians songs doesn't make sense. Or is north hausa singers not part of Nigeria grin

In North 80 of our singers makes lyrical songs. Just say 97%percent of igbo, YORUBA songs pidgin songs dont makes sense grin for me the only singers in North who makes no or little sense are YNS tongue

There is a reason why Michael Jackson songs are still rated very high by music critics,
even kids unborn will still love his music.
Same can't be said of gangnam style which has faded away.

Good music isn't just about entertainment.
Good Music died in the early 2000's. Go to youtube and watch the greats from the 70's to the 80's and then read the comments. You will find this sentiment expressed the most: What happened, why do we have such shitty music today.

Look at MJ, sound oo, e dey, lyrics oo, e dey, improvisation, e dey, social impact oo, e dey. Even the rock and roll guys had great lyrics. Listen to Hotel California or even the rappers Tupac and others. Ten years from now nobody's going to listen to the mud this guys spew out as music. Time will wash it away. Some sing for the moment, some sing for eternity.

Foreign love song:
Baby i'll still be loving you till my 70s... people fall in love in mysterious way, maybe just the touch of a hand...

9ja love song:
Gift put off the light, ogede ti pon baby lets make some love to night, your backside na helele, your front soft pass butter

And those lyrics up there defines our varying mentality of love. For some love is the act of sex for ether love is the beautiful little things we do for a special someone which may not include the act of sex

Wizkid dey scream baby from beginning to the end yet he is the biggest African music export to the world.
Davido get voice wey dey frog jump yet he has the biggest song in Africa this year.
That shows you its not a Nigerian thing but an African thing. Besides music is not all about passing messages always, it depends on the mood of whoever is behind the microphone.
oga all these things na jazz now....

Lyrics matter. I shouldn’t even have to say this.

Just like you may not enjoy a foreign film without subtitles,
you shouldn’t listen to music without getting the message .

It's diff strokes . Youths only listen to the beat but mature minds listen beyond the beat ...to the message . Thats what makes some songs evergreen because their themes/messages will always occur in our lives.

Songs with good beats only last a while but songs with good lyrical message will last a life time

;DFucK off dude simple question you can't answer. To say 97% percent of Song in Nigeria are not lyrical or not meaningless is bullshit grin

And why do you want to ignore the fact that pidgin English song she is talking about don't make 97% of Nigerians songs.

Rating 97% of Nigerians songs as meaningless (when you only listen to the like of ( Wizkid, Olamide, phyno ,Tecno) It's a big insult to Nigerian lyrical Singers of Hausa, YORUBA, Igbos,Kanuri ,Fulani that don't record their songs on the language she understands (pidgin)
grin

undecided you are the bigot one here wanting to acknowledge 97% Nigerians songs are meaningless when you only heed and understand pidgin songs grin

Their are more songs recorded in our traditional languages than in pidgin or English songs or put together. Like in the north English and pidgin could only take 10% of songs record in the region. You don't wanna accept the reality Bleep you tongue
