The Federal Government of Nigeria has stated that the payment of pension benefits to retired Biafran police officers would end the painful legacies of the Nigerian Civil War.

DAILY POST reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the payment of pension to police personnel who served under the defunct Biafran police during the civil war.

The affected police officer were part of the Nigerian Police Force before the outbreak of the war but found themselves on the Biafran side when the war commenced between 1967 – 1970.

Executive Secretary, PTAD, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor, on Friday announced that 162 officers who have never been on the payroll, and 57 Next of Kin who have not been paid their death benefits, would be paid on Friday, in the first batch of the exercise.

Another set, comprising about 155 retired Biafran police officers, who are on the payroll but were being ‘short paid’, would be paid in the next batch as soon as their pension benefit computation is concluded, Ikeazor added.

The PTAD boss explained that the payment of the pension benefits was part of measures taken by the Federal Government to heal the wounds of the Civil War.

“This represents another decision by the current Federal Government to bring closure to the painful legacies of the Civil War, and indeed a clear demonstration that President Muhammadu Buhari is indeed a father to all Nigerians and that his administration’s reforms under PTAD will ensure that Nigerians who spent the productive years of their lives serving their nation will not experience difficulties in getting their pensions,” Ikeazor said.

Chairman of the Association of Retired War Affected Police Officers, the union of the retired Biafran police personnel, Mr. Matthew Udeh, explained that the payment of their pension benefits came after a long period of agitation.

Speaking to journalists, he said, “I was a police officer of the rank of ASP before the war ended. We happen to have served in Biafra during the war. After the war, some policemen and soldiers who served in Biafra during the war were dismissed. We felt that was unfair because other federal civil servants who served in Biafra during the war were reabsorbed. So, from 1970, we started agitating for justice.

“We agitated through all the heads of state that took over after the war, until the second coming of Olusegun Obasanjo as a civilian president. On May 29, 2000, he granted us amnesty by formally retiring us.”

When will these people eventually receive sense?

Can't the APC for once put aside their useless propaganda and insensitivity in playing on people's emotions and engage in real governance?

How would this do an inch of good to silencing the current Biafra agitation largely undertaken by young "pained" people?

If there's any iota of dignity and selflessness in these people, they should have commenced Restructuring process asap

The restoration of Biafra is the only thing that can heal the deep wounds of the Civil War ...

Nigeria has no business being one nation
She is too diverse to survive
Our differences can't bring progress but rather rancor and nepotism
Nigeria should be an Islamic State that it is destined to be... By allowing majority of other faiths to leave this unholy and ungodly union

Imagine telling a man from the North not to marry four wives and bear children like he wants... It's not possible because it's against his religion...

Today we are giant of Africa only in population and nothing else... Millions of kids are out of school but who cares.. Let's tell ourselves the honest truth... Nigeria is doomed
Her citizens are being deported from all over the world including Ghana and Cameroon

The onus is on us to make sure we break up this mistake of a country

Was it about money? As long as the Nigerian government has failed to admit that there was a war in the first place, the contradictions would keep burning and protruding intermittently

These are men who served in the Nigerian Police before the pogrom and mass killings of Easterners 1966 forced them to run back home were they served under Biafra

Under Gowons "No victor Vanquished", these men should have been reabsorbed back into the Nigerian Police. However, it is known that all those who held the rank of Captain or its equivalent in the Nigerian armed forces and above that served in Biafra were dismissed after the war. They were also all demoted, which is why people like Robert Emeka Akonobi and Chris Ugokwe, both Igbos, who joined the Nigerian Army along with Northerners like Buhari and Shehu Musa Yaradua in April 1962, were still Lt Colonels in the late 70's while Buhari and Yaradua had become Brigadier Generals. Both Buhari and Yardua would eventually become Major Generals but neither Ugokwe or Akonobi made it past Colonel.

The men that are being paid now are judt getting what they should have got since 1970, almost 50 years ago, and it was kickstarted by Obasunjo and not Buhari.

Funny. That is a political blackmailing (bargaining?) tool they have and I doubt they'd wanna dump it as long as Nigeria lives.
