Injury sidelines Ntshumayelo

Posted: 2010-03-30 13:47

SuperSport United faces possibility of losing midfielder Thandani Ntshumayelo for the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury.

Ntshumayelo picked up the injury during the Telkom Knockout Cup loss against AmaZulu at the Super Stadium on Saturday.

The Under-20 star, who is line for the Young Player of the Season award, after his brilliant performance with Matsatsantsa this season, was replaced by Hlompho Kekana before half-time.

United's coach Gavin Hunt expresses disappointment at losing the influential midfielder for both their next CAF Champions League and the Nedbank Cup games.

"Thandanani is currently walking with the aid of crutches and looks likely to miss action for the rest of the season. He has been one of our best players and it will be sad to lose him for the rest of the season."

Hunt also confirms that midfielder Siyabonga Nkosi is still down with a bout of flu but expresses hope that the player will recover in time for their trip to Mozambique for the Champions League tie against Ferroviario this weekend.

"We only have 15 players for this weekend's game and hopefully he will be travelling with us to Mozambique." Hunt adds.

The Zimbabwe Football Association is so cash-strapped that it is withdrawing its Under-20 and Under-17 national teams from continental competitions.

This was disclosed yesterday by Zifa CEO Henrietta Rushwaya when she announced that the two development teams would not take part in the next month's African Youth Championship qualifiers.

She also cast a doubt, about the chances of the Warriors taking part in the 2012 Nations Cup qualifiers scheduled to start later this month, if the association - which has been wholly reliant on Government support since the turn of the millennium - continues to be isolated by its partners.

Two weeks ago, the Warriors almost cancelled their trip to Swaziland for a CHAN qualifier.

Only a last-minute rescue package - which involved the Government and private partners like Harare business executive Cuthbert Dube who is eyeing the post of Zifa chairman - rescued the Warriors' trip and ensured the players fulfilled their tie against Swaziland.

Warriors' players now to commute from home for their training sessions simply because Zifa has no money to put them in camp.

It was also disclosed yesterday that Zimbabwe Gunners' first leg upset of six-times champions Al Ahly in the CAF African Champions League may prove to be in vain as the cash-strapped Zimbabwean champions also cannot raise the funds to make the return leg in Egypt.

Gunners recorded a 1-0 victory in Harare on Saturday but the chances of the team even lining up on the pitch for the second leg of the second round tie appear remote.

"We don't have the money to go to Cairo to fulfill the second leg of the tie and when you have no money it means that you can't fly," team owner Cuthbert Chitima told the state-owned Herald newspaper.

SuperSport march past Ferroviario

Posted: 2010-03-21 09:28

SuperSport United beat their Mozambique counterparts Ferroviario de Maputo 3-0 in a CAF Champions League second round, first leg game at the Rand Stadium on Saturday.

The goals were scored by a brace from Tebogo Langerman and an own goal by Danito. All three goals were set up by Anthony Laffor.

In the first half SuperSport were on top and held a territorial advantage, Ferroviario opted to hit United on the counter attack.

In the 37th minute Laffor sent over a pin point cross to Langerman who slotted in from close range, 1-0.

United made it 2-0 in the 46th minute when Danito, in attempting to clear another dangerous Laffor cross, steered the ball into his own net.

In the 61st minute Laffor laid on a cross which Langerman slotted home for his second and SuperSport's third goal of the afternoon.

Chibambo the hero in Heartland draw

Posted: 2010-03-21 09:03

A brace from Signs Chibambo helped Heartland come from behind twice and earn a 2-2 draw in Douala against Tiko United FC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second round tie on Saturday.

Ake Ambeno gave Tiko the lead after sixty minutes when he found himself unmarked in the box and rounded goalkeeper Austin Brown.

Chibambo, who replaced Joshua Obaje on 67 minutes, took only nine minutes to find the target. The Zambian outpaced his markers to get on the end of a whipped cross from the right and level the game.

Five minutes later, the hosts were back in front. This time, it was Tamen Nganthe's turn to restore the advantage for the hosts.

Again, it was Chibambo to the rescue, using his pace to get to a wonderful low cross from Bello Musa Kofarmata with three minutes of play left.

Heartland will now be confident of progress when they host the second leg in two weeks at Owerri.

Nigerian clubs progress

Posted: 2010-04-05 11:44

Heartland, Enyimba and Warri Wolves all secured progress to the next stage of CAF continental competitions over the weekend.

In the CAF Champions League, Heartland looked comfortable after a 2-2 first leg draw in Cameroon, but were five minutes away from elimination.

Joel Djondang gave the visitors a shock lead on the half hour mark, and it took a late goal from Emmanuel Omodiagbe, five minutes from time, to calm beating hearts and send the Naze Millionaires through on the away goals rule.

Like Heartland, Warri Wolves looked all but assured of progress following their 3-0 first leg home win, and with scores at 0-0 going into the break, the CAF debutants were on their way to the next round.

But after Ogaga Aniwhi was sent off on 50 minutes, the Zambians scored two goals in 17 minutes through Enoch Sakala, threatening a third to derail Wolves ambitions.

The Nigerians however, held on, and moved to the next stage of the competition.

By far, the most difficult task of the three fell on Enyimba, who needed to overturn a 0-2 deficit to join Wolves in the next round of the CAF Confederation.

Needing three goals to advance, they quickly set about their business. Junior Osagie opened scores after just two minutes, and then cancelled the deficit on 20 minutes.

The winner came late into the game. This time, it was Uche Ukpabi who secured the victory, and progress with a goal on 70 minutes.

Ismaily of Egypt won 1-0 at Al Hilal, and Tunisia’s Esperance beat Al Merreikh 3-0. Dynamos, JS Kabylie and Entente Setif also claimed victories, while South African champion Supersport United drew 1-1 with Nigeria’s Heartland FC.

SUPERSPORT MAY STOP CAF PARTICIPATION

Posted: 2010-05-11 16:15

Reigning PSL champions SuperSport United are likely to snub next season's CAF Champions League after their third round exit at the hands of Nigerian outfit Heartland.

The Matsatsantsa players have complained of being fed just bread during their pre-match meal, but the club’s commercial manager Jose Ferreira says that’s not the sticking point.

“Certainly, what happened to us in Nigeria raised question marks about our future participation,” Ferreira tells KickOff.com.

SuperSport United were informed on match-day that kick-off time had been changed to an hour earlier.

“It is about things like changing the kick-off time on the day of the match, which is contravention of the Fifa and CAF regulations, that kind of stuff,” he says.

SuperSport apparently spent R500 000 on travel costs to get the team down to Owerri in Nigeria and Ferreira believes the tournament is not worth it.

“No, it is not worth it. You spend a lot of money on the worst-run organisation in the world. It is not a competition worthy of its name. You can’t change kick-off time on the day of the match, you can’t, but that’s what happens at CAF. We will seriously consider our future participation,” Ferreira adds.

SuperSport have now dropped down to the CAF Confederation Cup and if they don’t honour it, they will cop a three-year ban.

However, if they choose not to play from the start in next year’s CAF Champions League, there will be no ban.

SuperSport, along with seven other teams that came unstuck in the weekend’s Champions League matches, now drop down to the CAF CConfederation Cup.

Ike confident despite tough draw

Posted: 2010-05-14 19:47

Heartland captain ThankGod Ike says the team will make it to the semifinal of the CAF Champions League in spite of being drawn in the group of death.

Last year's finalists have been pooled in Group B with three former winners including 6-time winners Al Ahly, Morocco's JS Kabylie and Egypt's Ismaili.

Defender Ike admits that it is a tough draw.

"This is a more difficult draw than what we had last year," he told KickOffNigeria.com. "But we believe in ourselves and we know that if we win our home games and get at least one draw away from home, we will qualify."

Heartland are the only team out of the three in the group not to have won the competition but the big defender said that would be no hindrance.

"We have confidence in our team and we know that if we play our game, we can beat any team anywhere."

Heartland defeated SuperSport United 4-2 on aggregate to reach the group stages.

The other group has defending champions TP Mazembe, former winners Esperance and ES Setif along with Dynamos

Five ex-champs still in Champs League

Posted: 2010-05-10 12:29

Five former African champions plus holders TP Mazembe of DR Congo have sealed their places at the mini-league stage of the Orange CAF Champions League.

The quintet are record winners Al-Ahly and Egyptian compatriots, Isamily; Algerian duo JS Kabylie and Entente Setif, and Esperance of Tunisia proved their worth in the premier continental club championships to seal their place the lucrative group phase.

The list is completed by last year’s losing finalists, Heartland of Nigeria and Zimbabwean side Dynamos.

This therefore means that there is no debutant remaining in the Orange CAF Champions League, leaving the battle in the hands who have had previous experiences with the competition.

In Cairo, a last-gasp strike from teenager Shehab Amed proved the decider as the Ahly cruised to a 3-0 Al-Ittihad of Libya and advance 3-2 on aggregate.

After a barren first half, forward Emad Moteab scored the opener on 59 minutes with a superb strike in the penalty area before Mohamed Fadl headed home the second goal on 74 minutes.

Fadl’s goal kept the tie at 2-2 but 19-year old Shehab netted the much-important third goal with a lone range effort that beat Ittihad goalie Samir Aboud in added on time.

Holders TP Mazembe kept their defence aspirations on track with a 3-0 win over Malian side Djoliba AC thanks to a brace from Alain Kaluyitkua Dioko and the other from captain Tresor Mputu Mabi.

Elsewhere in Luanda, Angolan champions Petro Atletico managed a 2-1 win over JS Kabylie but the latter progressed 3-2 on aggregate. David Malgalhaes and winger Ricardo Job scored the hosts whilst Mohamed Aoudia grabbed a crucial away goal for the “Canaries”.

Former winners Ismaily completed a double over Sudanese giants Al-Hilal with a 3-0 victory to cruise on 4-1 on aggregate.

The Egyptians came from behind after Edward Sadomba had shot the visitors into the lead on 27 minute to score through Mohamed Homos, Ahmed Farag and Ahmed Khairi.

Algerian champions Entente Setif maintained an impressive run in the competitive managing a 2-2 draw in Lusaka against Zanaco of Zambia.

Entente Setif were cruising to victory after goals Nabil Hemani and Lazhar Aissa had neutralised Makundika Sakala’s opener, before Kennedy Nketani levelled for the Zambians five minutes from time.

Zimbabwean torchbearers cut short the campaign of debutants Gaborone United of Botswana managing a barren draw in Gaborone to advance 4-1 on aggregate.

In Omdurman, Tunisian giants pulled a surprise 1-1 draw against Al-Merrikh to march on 4-1 on aggregate. An own goal by Conolese-import Janvier Bokungu gave the Sudanese giants the lead at half time but Wjadi Boauzzi drew parity seven minutes from recess.

SuperSport United bowed out after suffering a 3-1 defeat against Nigeria’s Heartland.

Heartland will fall – Aboutrika

Posted: 2010-07-16 12:28

Al-Ahly midfielder Mohamed Aboutreika has expressed optimism ahead of their CAF Champions League opener against Heartland FC of Nigeria on Sunday in Owerri.

The Egyptian champions face last year’s runners-up in their first Group B match at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, located in the south-eastern part of Africa’s most populous country.

Aboutrika, a regular face in the continental club championship during the past half-decade, remains upbeat of the Red Devils’ quest to grab a convincing result to put their ambitions of an unprecedented seventh title on track.

Heartland’s compatriots Kano Pillars masterminded the exit of the Egyptian giants last year, but Aboutrika, undoubtedly the most famous Egyptian player, is convinced their outing during a training tour of Germany and Austria puts them in a good stead.

The 31-year-old reckons the Nigerians are also bent on improving on their status as last year’s losing finalist to champions this term.

“It will be a difficult game and the result is important for our course. The players are focused for the game and we have prepared feverishly for the game.”

The talented midfielder has been an integral part of the Ahly squad since joining in 2004 and was instrumental in their continental conquest of 2005, 2006 and 2008. Aboutrika, twice winner of the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt in 2006 and 2008, was named as Best Player on the continent by CAF in 2008.

Ahly’s rivals Ismaily will host Algerian outfit JS Kabylie in the other Group B clash.

In Group A, holders TP Mazembe of DR Congo will face Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe in Harare whilst Entente Setif of Algeria engages Tunisia’s Esperance in Setif.

Samson Siasia has admitted to the BBC that his appointment as coach of Nigeria's Heartland came "very late".

The former coach of the Nigerian Olympic team was appointed on Monday.

That gave him only a week to prepare for Heartland's first game in the group phase of the African Champions League.

"Of course it's late, but they knew what they were doing when they asked the other coach to leave and came to me," Siasia told the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track.

"I know this is a very difficult job I'm taking right now and I know it's going to be very difficult, especially not knowing these players as well as I should."

Heartland host the six-times winners of the African crown, Al Ahly of Egypt on Sunday, and Siasia is preparing for a tough test.

"Al Ahly is a very strong team, tactically they are very sound, but we'll just have to go out there and do our best," he said.

"We are playing at home so that should count for something - we'll have to find a way to win the game and get more confidence as we move along."

Siasia, who played for Nigeria at the World Cup in 1994 and is also a former coach of the U-20 squad, reiterated his desire to take charge of the senior national side, the Super Eagles, at some stage in his career and said he would be prepared to leave Heartland if offered that chance.

"The national team supercedes anything you are doing in any club in Nigeria, so there won't be any problem for them to let me go - I'm just here as a caretaker for six months, that's all."

The other two teams in Group B of the Champions League are Egypt's Ismaili and JS Kabylie of Algeria - they also play on Sunday.
