The two are grouped together because since the Fulani war their histories have been largely intertwined within Nigeria, they are two different tribes but they have co-existed between each other through religion, generations of intermarriage and language..nowadays is very hard to differentiate them apart,if not impossible, that's why u often see hausa/fulani..thats one thing I'm yet to figure out myself, whether in hausa or fulani

Hausas are main settlers in the northern Nigeria. Fulanis are migrants from Guinea. They are not the same but religion and inter-marriage brought them close and bonded.

The easiest way to spot an hausa man & a fulani is through hard-drugs consumption. Hausa's are addicted to hard-drugs that you can't even imagine of, while the fulani's are bloody vampires.
Hausa person can easily show mercy on someone, but fulani doesn't forgive neither would they forget. e.g Bubu vs Dasuki since 1984-present.

Their languages are very different! angry Someone gave a graphic description of the Fulani on NL a few years back. Here it is:

Fulaman198:
Tooroobe are native to Senegal, what are you saying. They are named after Fouta Tooro which comprises both Senegal and Mauritania.

We Fulani in Nigeria have numerous clans more than 20. Like the Kesu'en, Mbororo'en, Etc etc. The Toroobe (like Baaba Maal) are numerous and mainly today exist in Fouta Tooro as fishermen.

We are West African, we are not Ethiopians nor Syrians (that's even more ridiculous). We lived and inhabited North West Africa and have been in the West African region for a minimum of 10,000 years.

The Fulani in Nigeria are powerful and assertive because they conquered the peaceful agrarian indigenes(Hausa) speaking people. Nowadays there is not much difference between the two inherently different ethnic groups.

Islam is a religion they share and have in common, since the conquest and pacification of the North, by the Fulani led jihad of Uthman Dan Fodio. The Hausa are generally peaceful and tolerant, hence it was relatively easy for the minority Fulani to over throw their leaders, and install Fulani leadership or Chiefs in place of indigenous Hausa leadership.

Polygamy is prevalent in pre-conquest Africa, but Islam in the sahel region also gave it added legitimacy everywhere, in consonant with traditional African customs, in Hausa land. The Fulani being typically monogamous, is because of their traditional life style- pastorial/nomadism. It is also cheaper and mobile for them to be monogamous, not because they are more disciplined or not.

Fulani are vengeful and unforgiving, because they can afford to be so, amongst very tolerant, peaceful and laid back agrarian neighbours. They are not actually very aggressive nor domineering in other places in West Africa, as they are in Northern Nigeria.

I think that the overall peaceful nature of other Nigerians have been construed as laziness or cowardice by the Fula, and it raises the mystic of the so called brave fulani in the Nigerian sphere, quite unlike other places where they are looked down on, or even discriminated against.

I blame the middle-belt farmers for being unreasonably tolerant and fearful in their own land/farmlands being trespassed and destroyed by roaming fulani herdsmen. Physically, they are slim built or willowy and vary in complexion depending on which country they come from.

The Hausa language is also spoken by the Fulani and majority indigenes. It is only natural that it is so, the fulani are the minority ethnic group.

The Fulani are from somewhere else north west, and West of Nigeria - Guinea, Niger, Mali and other places in West Africa. You can actually discern their origin/ethnicity from some of their names quite distinct from the Hausa.

The eating or food habits of the Fulani depending on where they come from, are quite distinct from typical indigenous Hausa eating habits/taste. The Fulani are predominantly business/trading people(nomads) whereas the Hausa are also traders and Farmers(sedentary).

Their mode of dressing and embroidery, jewellery etc are quite different from the Hausa. There are more differences between the two groups.

Inter-marriages have gone a long way in neutralising some very distinct differences between them culturally and physically, hence the constant annoying "Hausa/Fulani" terminology by other Nigerians, to group them together as if they are one and the same, but for Islam(religion) for the majority of them.

There are Christians amongst the two groups especially amongst the indigenous Hausa. There are animists/ traditional religion amongst them too.

when I said language,i meant they are both United by "hausa" language,99% of fulani speak hausa..there are even cases whereby an authentic fulani doesn't speak fulfude but hausa

You mentioned two tribes and asked if they are the same thing

Hausa and Kanuri are not the same people talkless of Fulani who were/are immigrants

Hausaland is the North West Nigeria and across the border while Fulani people have no ancestral land in Nigeria, they conquered the Hausa, islamized and rule over them before the white men came.

Just like the Yoruba people in Kwara State

Learn to differentiate a state from a town. Ilorin is different from kwara.

Kwara state has numerous Obas and one Emir in Ilorin given to them by Afonja when he rebelled against the Alafin. They (Afonja, some Yoruba commanders together with Hausa and Fulani)later defeated Oyo but they were later defeated decisively by the Ibadan warriors and pushed back to Ilorin. The Yorubas in Ilorin later killed an Emir when their eyes opened that a slave..Fulani...was ruling over them .Another Fulani was installed by the British. The Yorubas wanted to kill him and he fled to Sokoto.Later, the British brought him back and when the Yorubas saw that the British will always do this if they continue in this manner, they left the Emir and later contested the throne in courts up to the supreme court.A white paper that favoured the Afonja family as the rightful owner of the leadership..throne.. in Ilorin was not allowed to see daylight by the Hausa Fulani governments who the British gave power to when they were leaving.Hausa Fulanis do not have what it takes to face Yoruba in war. They have always been defeated decisively even until recently.Ask Buhari.

They are different ethnic groups. Hausa are indigenous to most of northern Nigeria, while Fulani are settlers from around the Futa Jallon mountains in Guinea. They have separate languages. The Fulani speak Fulfulde, but Hausa was the language of trade in the northern parts of West Africa long b/4 white people came to Africa. In the north speaking Hausa is seen like being able to speak English.

If not for the jihad led by Usman dan Fodio (a Fulani cleric), the Hausa would still be ruling places like Sokoto, Kano, Zaria, etc. The jihad installed Fulani emirs in the majority of northern Nigeria and further down south to Ilorin, but El Kanemi in the Borno Empire made sure they couldn't defeat the Kanuris.

When the British came they saw an advanced system of govt with the Fulani in charge in northern Nigeria. So they co-opted it into their "indirect rule" system - it was cheaper b/c it meant being able to govern Nigeria with the help of the Fulani aristocracy and without the need for many British colonial officials. This British alliance with the Fulani aristocracy continued after independence where the British even rigged censuses and elections to ensure the Fulani remain in charge.

The Hausa are conquered people. Very few Hausas rise to the top in the north. The mosques, govt, businesses, etc are dominated by Fulani. B/c they speak Hausa and with religion, the Sultan of Sokoto - a Fulani - is the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-mumunin), the Fulani have created the impression that they are the same with the Hausa. This is just for political purposes. They are a minority dominating a majority. There is an association of Fulani elites across West Africa that brings together Buhari, Atiku, Shagari and many others from Cameroon, Ghana, etc. They don't invite a single Hausa man.

Most of Nigeria's problems can be rooted to Dan Fodio's jihad and the British colonial plans to control Nigeria with the help of the Fulani aristocracy. Even the pogroms against Igbos in 1966 and subsequent civil war was b/c the 1966 coup tried to change British plans for Nigeria.
