Menstrual pain or menstrual cramps also known as dysmenorrhea or menorrhalgia are pains ranging from dull, severe, aching or cramping pains that occur along the abdominal and pelvic regions during, before or shortly after every menstrual flow. These pains can also be felt along the lower back region or even in the thighs. This is one thing that makes the adorable menstrual period become very annoying and undesirable. Menstrual pains are not strange or abnormal. It is a normal thing that almost all girls (especially those in their teen ages) witness. However it is, just know that menstrual pain is not peculiar to you alone. It is a general problem. And you know that a general problem is no problem.


WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF MENSTRUAL PAIN/MENSTRUAL CRAMPS?
Menstrual pain or menstrual cramps also known as dysmenorrhea or menorrhalgia are pains ranging from dull, severe, aching or cramping pains that occur along the abdominal and pelvic regions during, before or shortly after every menstrual flow.

Menstrual pain is caused by Hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, as reported by medical news today Prostaglandins are chemicals that form in the lining of the uterus during menstruation. They cause muscle contractions and cramps that are similar to labor pains. They can also contribute to nausea and diarrhea. The contractions inhibit the blood flow to the lining of the uterus, or endometrium. It may also happen because there are high levels of leukotrienes during menstruation.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR MENSTRUAL PAIN/CRAMPS:
Menstrual pain does not happen in every girl. Those who stand the chance of experiencing menstrual pain include
Being younger than 20 years of age
Starting puberty at 11 years or younger
Menorrhagia, or heavy bleeding during periods
Never having given birth
Use of contraceptive pills.

SYMPTOMS OF MENSTRUAL PAIN

The only symptom is pain. Yes, pain and nothing but pain. But there are other associated symptoms. They are:
pain in the lower back and thighs
nausea and vomiting
sweating
faintness and dizziness
diarrhea or loose stools
constipation
bloating
headaches
Other symptoms include, inner abdominal pain, inner thigh and hip pain; abdominal upset and weakness as was put forward by webmed.

WHAT TO DO If YOU HAVE MENSTRUAL PAIN
Menstrual pain is not a hospital condition. It is something you can manage at home. But if it becomes severe, you must see your doctor.

TREATMENT OF MENSTRUAL PAIN
Any pain killer can be used to stop menstrual pains. You can use non-opiods like our popular paracetamol. But the best drugs of choice are the NSAIDS - Non-steroidal anti-Inflammatory Drugs. Examples: Ibuprofen, Piroxicam, Meloxicam, celecoxib etc. They are very nice for this.


WHAT ARE THE WAYS I CAN PREVENT MENSTRUAL PAIN?
To prevent menstrual pain, the following ways can be of help:
Regular exercise
eat enough fruits and vegetables
Avoid contraceptive pills like postinor
Reduce stress
Avoid smoking
Reduce alcohol intake
Avoid foods that contain caffeine
