If the poster meant black person (man or woman)
As at now, I don't think even Mandela has the power Oprah has.
Remember that Oprah put gay and bi-sexual rights on the table for average americans.
Her influence on white america is so strong
That's why Obama is highly rated to have won her endorsement

Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is the American multiple-Emmy Award winning host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the highest-rated talk show in television history.[1] She is also an influential book critic, an Academy Award-nominated actress, and a magazine publisher. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and the world's only black billionaire for three straight years. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world

Check this out
Winfrey's influence reaches far beyond pop-culture and into unrelated industries where many believe she has the power to cause enormous market swings and radical price changes with a single comment. During a show about mad cow disease with Howard Lyman (aired on April 16, 1996), Winfrey exclaimed, "It has just stopped me cold from eating another burger!" Texas cattlemen sued her and Lyman in early 1998 for "false defamation of perishable food" and "business disparagement", claiming that Winfrey's remarks subsequently sent cattle prices tumbling, costing beef producers some USD$12 million. On February 26, after a trial spanning over two months in an Amarillo, Texas court in the thick of cattle country, a jury found Winfrey and Lyman were not liable for damages. (After the trial, she received a postcard from Roseanne Barr reading, “Congratulations, you beat the meat!”) In June 2005 the first case of mad cow disease in a cow native to the United States was detected in Texas. The USDA concluded that it was most likely infected in Texas prior to 1997.

In 2005 Winfrey was named the greatest woman in American history as part of a public poll as part of The Greatest American. She was ranked #9 overall on the list of greatest Americans.

Winfrey's reach extends far beyond the shores of the U.S., where 49 million U.S. viewers see her talk show weekly. The show airs in 117 countries around the world “from Australia to Zimbabwe.”

I don't think even Mandela has this kind of power. . .

Please stop comparing Mandela to Oprah, they are not even in the same league!

Oprah is simply a wealthy TV mogul. Even in the arena of wealth, she's not at the top of that game - the Gates, the Buffets, the Helús, etc will put her in her place.

On the global stage, beyond the naive American crowd, Nelson Mandela is a giant!

The author said "Powerful And Respectful", and I submit that what Mandela lacks in (political) power, he makes up a million fold in respect.

Nelson Mandela can only be compared with fellow titans of this highly influential epoch in history: Pope John Paul II, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Albert Einstein, Mother Theresa, etc.

Mayne, I never even stopped to check out Mandela's profile.
But I think Mandela is no longer as active as he used to be.
More like Pope John Paul in his last days.
Oprah has a talk show, her voice is heard almost everyday.

please! oprah ain't got no power. she has a lot of influence, and can cause people in power to act, but really she has very limited authority/power. Her influence is the key to her success, as it is with many other blacks.

First of all, the title should say most "respected" black people not "respectful"

Oprah and Mandela? No way! Nelson Mandela is way above Oprah's league. Oprah is rich, she's the most successful female talk show host in American TV history, but she doesn't have what it takes to be Nelson Mandela!

Talking about respect, Oprah seem to hate Nigerians, so if we're voting, she'll lose the vote of most Nigerians. I do not respect her(but I guess my opinion doesn't count undecided). Powerful she is, but not so respected.
