The Lagos State Government said it has arrested 1,680 beggars and rescued 162 abandoned and homeless children from streets in the state. Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Agboola Dabiri disclosed this on Wednesday in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria at a ministerial press conference. According to him, a total number of 1,680 beggars/destitute/mentally challenged persons and street children were rescued off the streets of Lagos in the last one year, out of which 1,299 rehabilitees were released to their relations for re-integration. He said the government carried out reformatory services at the Rehabilitation and Training Centre, Majidun, specifically designed for rehabilitation of beggars, destitute and mentally challenged. “The Centre built as a transit Home presently has a population of 1,288 rehabilitees undergoing medical treatment, Psycho–social therapy, behavioural modification and further social investigation,” he disclosed. Dabiri further disclosed that the ministry’s Child Development Department, in the last one year rescued 162 children, comprising 62 males and 100 females. Giving a breakdown, he disclosed that 79 abandoned children were found in Lagos, while 15 girls were sexually abused and 28 other girls physically abused, adding that five children were emotionally abused; 32 others placed on care and shelter and three children in conflict with the law. More so, Dabiri revealed that 57,350 school children benefited from individual and group counseling sessions to curb truancy, gangsterism, abscondment and other social vices. “Five pregnant school children were assisted to access adequate antenatal and delivery services. They were also integrated back to school. 150 reported cases of sexual and physical abuse were treated in 2017. With the introduction of Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, more school children were encouraged to report cases of abuse,” he said. The commissioner disclosed that 40,270 HIV/AIDS patients were counseled along with their relations in the last one year, while 5,395 indigent patients and 231 destitute patients were assisted to obtain necessary medical services, amounting to N18,520, 118 He added that 950 road traffic accident victims and abandoned patients were assisted to access medical treatment amounting to N3,658,450.00 in the last one year. On adoption and fostering, Dabiri said officials from the Ministry embarked on international adoption monitoring trips to check the progress of Lagos State children adopted internationally in countries, such as United States of America, Canada, Belgium and Spain.
